God i hope it has limitations because if it didnt Blinky would be by far the best class.

    BUT MARINES OWN OVERALL!!!! <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo-->

Blinky Rules!  I can't wait to chew on Marines with him!

It's a good point though, how is the blinking regulated? Limited distance? Time?  Can I reform inside a wall and kill myself?

Limited distance right now - it's kind of moot, he's pretty hard to use as he's such a new feature. I'm usually lucky to move 3 feet every 10 minutes <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->

Don't worry, there will be more info, and there won't be a way to simply jump around the map like an horribly fanged TARDIS.

It'll prolly be like the farting in RC (rocket crowbar), you'll press fire or something ,dunno then you'll teleport a set distance, blinky will be great for telefrags <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

It most definitely won't be a set distance. I'll fight that to my last breath. Having a choice between blinking through a two inch wall or a thirty feet drop is a great skill... and yes, it does take skill to blink. But right now blinking is broken, so it just takes a lot of random jumping and clicking.

well I don't like a set distance that much myself, but it's the only way it ca nbe done, how the hell are you gonna set the jump distance? Do it like a grenade the longer you press the button the further you'll jump?t'll make blinkin rather slow
  • MoleculorMoleculor Namer-of-Bob Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 9Members
That's exactly how it'll be done. And it'll work out pretty well, once it actually works like that. At present it requires luck, clicking a lot, and jumping randomly. (It's a bug.) Blinking is mostly done to bypass welds, and slip through doors undetected. And it gets a fair amount of use.

Thankyou Mole for pointing out the current buggy nature of the blinking code... *ahem*.

    Blinking will work like this:

You select blink from your weapon selection, hold down the mouse button and then release it. The longer you hold the button down, the further you blink, but no further than 6 ft or so.

The good thing about this system is that whilst you are in blink mode, you are *vunerable*. As blink is a weapon selection in itself, whilst you have it selected, you can't attack at all. The further you blink, the more time you are vunerable and defenceless.

So we're not talking about moving serious distance here. Will (after bugs are ironed out) it be a skill that can be used in combat?  (Say, blink in behind the guy who was shooting at you to rip his head off?) Or just a transportation device. (Damn, there's a wall here. -blink- HAHA Now I'm beyond the wall....and right in front of a siege gun.  Not my day.)

okay scrap that.  Merkaba just answered my question while I was posting.  I hate that.

yeah.. thatll take the fun out of it (not being abel to use weapon) but ofcourse its fairer...no marine wants a monster jumping around and slashing of there heads.so i dunno...

so whats to stop you from blinking out into the void outside of a map?
  • MistahRedrumMistahRedrum Join Date: 2002-01-25 Member: 81Members
AYou mean besides the fact that it is pointless and most lieky kill ya? I am sure there will be someway to limit that just like this is a way to stop the flier from flying off the map... i think o.O

You can't blink out into the void, and you can't blink into a wall.  It's just that simple.

This is just me guessing from what I've read so far but I get the impression that blinking would have its uses for combat if timed properly.

If you had blinking prepared (i.e. equipped and charging) as you approached a marine then you could blink behind/flank/in front of it, quickly switch to melee and slash at him.  Of course, the time it would take to charge the blink and change weapons (I assume) would only make this technique good for starting the encounter, and not that useful in the heat of a big fight (no teleporting around, taking heads off).  But it could be useful for throwing off the marines and closing in for the melee kill.

thats how i get it firefro this will also be good for like geting in behind a group of guys camped ouy

It seems this alien has no way of getting higher up the map, no wall climbing, flying, wall jumping.
Blinking could be used but only for short heights, not as effective

Does that mean that a Blinky unfamiliar with the map might accidently blink himself out of the ship and into cold cruel space?  -On the next week's episode of Alien Bloopers-

Actually, Blinky can "olly" off walls - hit another jump and rebound off a wall.  He can't use the vents so well, being human-sized and not a climber, but he doesn't really need to.  He just kicks @$$ and takes names.

What about having more distance then 6'? The key is that

1:Getting stuck in a wall will telefrag you.
    2:Past a certain distance(6&#39<!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo--> the time your defenseless increases quicker.

The main reason is to do stuff like get across 30' chasms.

There is so much potential to **** up that's it's worth it to have great travel distance. <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

whatever the Ns team decides will be the best solution, I'm sure of it.  Either way, I'd still prefer to be able to travel further than 6'.... i mean come on, that's not very far at all.  If that's the maximum distance than all blinking will be good for is going through welds.  It should have more uses than that!

6 ft is far enough in my opinion. We don't want to give them a HUGE advantage, but a good blinker will be EXTREMELY hard to kill. Imagine shooting a blinker and then having him appear right by your side with his teeth baring.

As for blinking across chasms...well, I ain't seen many chasms in NS so far <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo--> (Except in my map, but that's pure eyecandy.)

i know what would be cool <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo--> -> after blinking you immeadiatly get your melee weapon, so it would be made to kill... <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

    That's a good idea, Shuvit.Viper.

I know about the distance restrictions, but what I would like to know is whether there is an amount restriction, like a battery of sorts that would only let you teleport if it were charged sufficiently.

I like vipers idea of insta-weapon switch for blinky, it'd reduce the frustartion when trying to blink in a battle or confuse some defences.

    Why should there be one?

Blinky needs to charge himself up either way, so the ability is already restricting itself.

    Blinky starts taking incoming fire.

"Damn it!  Why do I always have to leave this big red arrow trailing behind me?"
