Partition, Format, Lindows...

<div class="IPBDescription">Help!!!</div> I have Windows XP on a 100+ Gig, single partition drive, and want to (re?)partition it and install Lindows 3.0.
Is it possible to do this without having to format the entire C:\ Drive?

Lindows is a Linux based OS that copied the Windows UI, and is also backwards compatible with a plethora of Windows file formats (*.ppt, *.doc, *.xls, etc.). OK, if Lindows can install into a fat 32 or NTFS partition, you're golden. If not, you're screwed.

Find that out. If it is able to install, make a boot disk, then place the atached file, if it lets me attach .exe's, onto your disk...

Here's where it gets tricky, hope you backed up your files.

A:\
A:\deltree.exe c:\windows <return>

If it works, then it will nuke your windows directory completely. Install Lindows.

If you can't install Lindows into an NTFS/Fat32 Partition, then I'm afraid you have to reformat, repartition.

its best to tottally wipe out everything on that harddrive, install windowsxp when you do that, do not make the parititon for the whole harddrive leave like a 5 gig block unpartioned when xp is done, then take lindows pop it in and install on that free amount of space.*unparitioned space* then let it do its lilo or grub or whatever. word of advise it maybe just as smart as using an old pentium 2 computer or 2 gig HD to swap in your computer to experiment with windows. to play halflife you need to install it w/some winapp emulater they have out that will do halflife but some hacking with the program it self to actually get it working. i hope your computer is nice and godlike because emulation takes alot of power to use.

all in all linux is not an easy way to go, Lindows is not the magic os that you think it is, well im out.

Get Redhat. If you were a 1337 Linux user, I would suggest Slackware.

Anyway - Linux OSes are installed using either Disk Druid or FDISK to partition. You might run into trouble if you try to partition your single drive. I highly suggest reformatting, setting up your main partitions in the Windows installer, then install your Linux distro and set up the other partitions (like /boot, /, and /swap) in Disk Druid.

You will need to partition your hard disk, Linux needs its on partitions for memory paging. Use Partition Magic 7.0 to create the necessary partitions without formatting your hard disk.

However, I suggest you back up those files that are really important to you.
