i am thinking of getting a WiFi connection in the house (802.11b) but i was wondering if the packet loss is significant enough to screw up my NS games

    apparently the ping is worse than 56k <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I played CS on an 802.11b connection for a little over a year, and my ping was no more than 5 ms higher than my room mates' ping (who were all on 10 base or 100 base T connections through the same router as me, my room was just far away so i went wireless) I really had no problems with it at all, no packet loss, no high pings, i even downloaded from newsgroups on it and had no problems. The only issue i ever had was the default channel was the same as my 2.4 gHz phone, so when the phone rang i would lose connection for a second (but i just changed the channel it used and that fixed my problems). I don't know that CS would really be any different than NS on a WiFi, so i'd say you're probably fine.

    I have wireless on my laptop, and it's fine ping wise (the framerate is terrible though). If you've got a good signal strength, shouldn't be a problem. You could always slow down your connection to 1Mbps and that should reduce packet loss/ping times.
    One of my house mates was playing once and the the server admin said he was running the server over wireless ... can't remember the server, and he may of made it up.
    So, yes, wireless should be more than good enough to play natural selection.

    It should be fine as long as your signal strength is good.

    There is going to be a Wi-Fi broadband internet connection with similar speeds as a cable connection. It's already being tested in an area in California. It's supposedly much cheaper than current broadband options. Estimated $30 a month, I believe.

    wifi for broadband is one of the most untapped ways of receiving internet. i just cant wait for it to get big so i will have more of a choice on broadband * charter price gorges me -- 55 dollars a month for 256kbs and 128kbs up * wifi is good for people who live in rural areas like me but the one we have in town is just that intown, www.speedyisp.com is what i can get here if i lived in town
