Crashes On Map Load...

Hey all, ever since I got NS (about 5 days after it came out), after I click the server I want in ASE, it begins loading as usual. then authenticates me blah blah, during map loading, I *sometimes* (I estimate 50% of the time) it crashes, gives me an error box saying 'Bad surface extents 2656/0' <-- that number changes... after this I have to alt+ctrl+del out of HL.
So when i finally do get in game sometimes after multiple retries, and map changes, you guessed it, 50% chance it will crash, this time with some error about surface sprites.
Now this has just gotten sooo damn unbarable <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> from what i understand, bad surface extents is a corrupt install. Well since I first got ns, I have completely upgraded my computer, changed everything except the video card, reinstalled XP pro etc. So I have reinstalled from scratch. Made sure the HL cd was in perfect order (not even a scratch on it), then to be safe I even re-downloaded NS setup from another location.
Still the same errors!! arrgghh!! this is so annoying.
I have the latest detonator drivers, directx 9 etc, Xp pro SP1

512mb sdram
gf2mx
40 gig seagate.
