Enabled Sound Makes My Ping In The 1000's

How can I make my sound work w/o lag?
Computer info:
CPU - Intel PII 400MHz
Video Card - NVIDIA GeForce 2 Ti 64MB
Sound Card - Crystal Semiconductor CS4236/37/38
Operating System - Windows 98
Graphics Mode and Resolution - Open GL 640 X 480
Not running EAX
Internet connection: ATT Broadband Cable (not networked)

Okay here is my problem, I just installed Half-Life: Counterstrike out of the reatail box and downloaded the version of Half-Life (1.1.1.0 Client) and several other Mods for Half-Life. All of them run fine, with one exception on NS.

When I connect to any NS internet game the sound is scrambled & my ping is 1000+, but when I play any other Mod it usually stays between 50 and 200 (depending on the server), and the sound is fine. I assumed was that the sound was giving me the lag and high ping, so I disabled the sound and connected to several NS internet servers. My ping was never higher than 250 and the game seemed to run fine. I then enabled the sound and reconnected to each of the servers I had just connected to & my ping was back in the 1000's! Along with the high ping, the game was extremely laggy and i could barely move.

I created a LAN game to determine if it was just my compter creating the lag, or if the servers were causing it. With the sound enabled, my ping on the LAN game was 200+. However, with the sound disabled my ping remained at 0 during the LAN game. I have already changed from full acceleration, in dxdiag, to no acceleration, and have checked most of the posts on these forums, but I see nothing about this problem.

So my questions/concerns/problems with the NS Mod is: Why is my sound card not working with NS and giving me such a high ping? Please help me if you can.

Thank you for taking time to read and possibly finding an answer for this post. And by the way the game looks very cool! Keep up the great work!

NS uses 16-bit sounds. HL was made to support 8 bit, but it works on SB cards. It may be that, I'm really not sure.

Okay... um... I was checking around and I was looking for a way to change my sound options to skip some of the sounds or something like that and I couldn't find anything, if anyone knows how to change the sound options, on windows 98 with my sound card, to be compatable with the NS mod i would really appericiate it.

I would also like this info. I get lag from sounds too, though not as severe. Only about an extra 20-35ms on my usual pings not 1000. lol. I have an in-built Avance AC'97 with the VIA Sound Controller on mine. Anyone know how to edit them ?

Kazuki, you may need a new sound card. I'm not sure how to fix it for you Kazikami . Hope this helps.

Oh, the joy of off-chip DSP sound-cards. Essentially the Winmodems of the audio world. Get a SBLive Value for $20. Should fix things neatly... and give you better sound quality, while you're at it. :b
