My First Model

30 Minutes Flat... My Very First Model!
This is my VERY FIRST MODEL *EVER*. I'm asking, is it good for a beginner? Like, for an ABSOLUTE beginner, who tried to model for the past two years without anything as good as a box? Sorry for turning this forum into a judging thing, but I want to get better. So, is it a good start? That's all I'm asking.

Thanks for your time,
-Sid

Please excuse the horrible quality, I had to use the lowest Jpeg setting to upload this beastie.

THANK YOU FOR A TOTOLLY UNINFORMATIVE POST!!

Anyways. Yes, it's a good start. Just keep on modelling, and you'll only get better.

looks very good for a first model, I would advise that you start modelling small objects (like grenades for example) which are small, simple and you can get hold of many reference pictures of them

you should sue the vertex tool, instead of just slapping together a whole bunch of squares and circles. but i guess its ok...

I appriciate all the positive posts! I'll take your advice and start modelling Grenades and such. Thanks so much, you've made my day!

Okay, here's an NS Hand Grenade

It comes as a sphere, but when you push in the button, it pops out (as shown) and you throw it... see, in the future, Grenades have simplicity!

I'm not exactly sure how to USE the vertex tool. I've tried many times before, but they ALWAYS come out looking like scribbles and being uneven... I don't even know how to connect them correctly.

I also have a couple questions: How do I upload normal half-life weapons into Milkshape> I read the "Modelling 101" topic, but I didn't really understand it well.

And how do I skin objects?

Hell, while I'm at it, how do I animate and upload into a game? (Like Half-Life, for instance)

EDIT: w00t, I have NO idea how I did this, but I edited the LMG in Milkshape (Some how), I put the Magazine on the bottom, and got rid of the blasted scope... I'm pretty sure this is nothing new. Tell me if you want pics.

Quake II? This may sound stupid, but I HAVE NEVER played Q2 before in my life! I don't even think I have seen pictures. Anyways, I THOUGHT the model was origanal... *sigh* But I DID make it myself... is it good?

PREPARE TO SHUDDER! For an hour, I tried using a vertex tool with NO luck, so, i used basic shapes to try and make a weapon A LOT similar to the LMG.

    Whatcha think about it...?

Can someone explaint he Vertex tool, and how to load a weapon to HL?

P.S. byt he way,t hat's a clip sticking out the side. It just looks like i's ont he end 'cause of the angle. FEAR MY HORRIBLE MODELLING SKILLS!

you've either decompiled a "t" model (which is texture information only), or youve imported a sequence (animation) .smd (which retains skeletal information only). youll need to import a reference (mesh) .smd from your decompiled model.

To use the Vertex tool, click out where you think your vertexes should go [start -simple-]. Notice where the vertexes are placed in relation to the axis [the three coloured 3D lines in the middle of the grid]. Once you're happy with where the vertexes are, you hit the Face tool and start selecting vertexes to make -triangles-. You can't make models with five-sided polies in Milkshape. Here's the tricky part: select the vertexes in counter-clockwise fashion. That means the face will be made to be facing toward you. If you select the vertexes in clockwise fashion, they'll be backwards, facing away from you. Of course, if you're working in the window that looks down and you want the faces you make to be the underside of something, you may want to do it clockwise so you don't have to flip them over later. It's up to you.

I would suggest getting the help file for Milkshape off Chumbalum's site. That's where I found out about counter-clockwising it, with a bit of searching.

No, really. And if you mapped, you'd do better than I could do to. Which is sad. Because it means I have 0 motivation.

But thats as far as I can pretty much go. The model itself still has numerous holes in it, it just looks "filled" from this angle... I don't know how to skin, or to add detail, and I'm still trying to figure out how to add it into HL. Heck, I still can't animate...

    I'll keep trying.

Be sure to use the four-window view when you're working and watch for your vertexes in at least two or three windows at once. Move that 3D view around a lot. Look at it in all its modes, too [flat shading, smooth shading, wireframe]. Even look at the 2D views in modes other than wireframe. Use your eyes, use your eyes. Look at everything from every angle in the 3D windows, remember the counter-clockwise rule when making faces. You'll do fine.
