Here are a few good suggestions for the commander.

1. Know what you are doing. Even if you don't have a plan, know the objectives, and know what the buildings look like and do. If you need some practice, either get on a small server and let your teamates know you are a newbie com, or go into a LAN game, turn on sv_cheats 1, and experement. At the very LEAST, you need 2 infantry portals, and an armory. Make SURE you make these buildings, even if you are just going to see what the others do.

2. Work towards a goal. Don't just sit around doing nothing.

3. Play god. Let your marines know you are there and want them to survive. If your marines are guarding a vital point and are injured, drop them some health. if they ask for ammo, give it to them. Talk to the marines, and let them know your master plan. Morale will improve and marines will follow your orders if you show you care about them.

4. Use rescources. If you are saving for somthing, let the marines know. If your RP gets over 100, marines start wondering what you are doing. If it gets over 200, you get in danger of being kicked out for not doing anything. If you have a lot of RPs sitting around, use them to drop weapondry, armor, and get upgrades.

The general call to order for the commander is greater then for any other player, they quite literally hold the game in their hands. I've lost to substandard marine teams with an execellent com, and won aginst CS-level marines with a bad commander. If you don't feel ready for commanding, stay out of the chair. Of course, you can't learn to command without a few spectacular losses. Just don't give up. the more you com, the better you get, and the more victorys you'll get.

Just make sure you adopt a plan.

just read around the forums. I believe there is a comm guide webbed in the Rine Strategies forums... if not there are about 20 threads for it spread all over these forums

I suggest to play a marine a lot of times first . And you learn the maps , the names of the hives and such ( thats VERY important ) . Also obserb how the other commanders play , where do they build and how .
Don't forget to use a mic too . Best commanders use their mic's very well , or they can write very fast on the chat.

*Disclaimer: With a decent Marine team, the bare minimum you need is one IP. And an Armory, while nice, is not absolutely needed.. especially if you are conserving RP for something in particular. Remember... Marines are free in non-Tournament games. Ammo is not, one way or another, beyond having them die and respawn with full clips. In fact, sometimes it pays to NOT have an Armory. Removes the temptation for your Marines to stand around collecting ammo that they're just going to rush out and die with, most still in their pockets, rather than charging up and taking back that point that got snatched away, or breaching that last line of defenders.

Yeah Talestin is right. However, if you dont build an armory in a pub server, be ready to explain why cuz I know that ( unless you have only experienced guys on the team ) some marines will start asking for it, thus not getting out of base until its built, which can hurt your objectives. But hey, YOU've got the control Do as you wish !

Welcome to our Community Junp!
(OMG you ve become an addict like me, ha?)
(To clear out the situation, this aint a game forum! Its a forum of ns-addicts trying to save their real lives)
(HAHAHAHA just kiddin NS COmmunity is the coolest I ve ever seen. You guys are so qute! I love ya all!)
And dont worry mate. Just play as Marine, Alien or Comm some times and sooner or later you ll get the hang of it. You must know the maps to be a good comm of course, as you need to know the Marine and Alien vulnerabilities and problems that could arise in different situations. Here at the forums you got plenty of threads to read. But I would also recommend this http://www.joe.to/ns/forward_base.php
and http://www.planetns.com/ strats and articles.

Well I've just done my 'com training' this weekend - I 'commed' my 1st 3 games I found that is you're in one of those games where no-one wants to com, as long as you announce that you're a n00b com, most people will cut you loads of slack (and some actually give you helpful advice)

Play loads as a marine 1st, then play loads as an alien - seriously, comm is the last thing you should learn if you want to be a good one. Simple things like placement of tf's to stop em being eaten - placement of spawns and phase gates, communicating with your team and dropping ammo and health packs. Giving waypoints... There's so much to remember, it's a lot easier if you keep thinking to yourself 'what would I want if I was in his position' -

There's nothing worse than playing as an alien trying to hold off marines who have a 'guardian angel' comm watching over em. (Feels great as a player too)

I don't know enough to spout on about tactics but I would say that the best comms...
1/ keep your team together
2/ always drop a med pack or ammo when requested
3/ don't give in to early requests for stuff
4/ use the jump button loads, your team will learn to use the >yell/need ammo or >yell/need orders etc.

BTW. I messed up the 1st one completely, the 2nd one I got 2 hives before being overrun (poor defenses and lack of research) - the 3rd one we kicked their ****. Yay!
