The Future Of Recycling

from the interview
In the interview Flayra mentioned that he may consider removing or revisiting recycling for the marines. Personally I think it should stay. I don't use it all that often but when I do it is extremely useful.

- Uneeded phase gates
- Portals/Gates that get spawning players stuck in map entities
- Relocating main base
- A hopeless outpost

just a few good reasons why recycling plays a major role in NS strategy. I'm not freaking out or anything. I just wanted to express my warm fuzzy feelings for recycling.

Why the fascination with the welder?

Comm clicks recycle, marines get a "recycle structure at waypoint" message, marines hold down use key to 'unbuild' scruture. Resources are returned for each point of health 'unbuilt', meaning a full health struture returns half resources, and an injured structure returns less than half.

Er, there is a 30-second odd timer between the commander clicking recycle and the structure being recycled. If you don't want stuff to get recycled, eat faster, or get some kharaa buddies to join in the feast.

TeoH, I'd agree with either of your solutions, but not both of them combined. Have a marine have to "use" it to unbuild it (same amount of time as to build it, maybe less *shrug*), or allow it to return the % of its health times the amount of resources it costs back to the resource pool.

That's my .002

Doing both is ridiculous, if the structure is losing health while being recycled, there's no way a marine should be there "unbuilding" it (ahem, the skulk wouldn't go after the marine?)

recycling is fine as is, you only get 1/3 of paid for resources back, and it takes forever, 2 skulks munching on any structure should take it down before the recycle even takes affect

I could see there being some kind of exploit protection on pub servers, because the main problem with recylcing is commanders who don't have strats to deal with a 2 hive alien force, and instead of trying to fight, they give up and recycle everything.

Above all, I think nothing should be changed in tournament mode, recycling should always work the way it always has in tourny mode. But I can't see taking recycling out of pub mode compleatly. Recycle is a useful feature that good commanders know how to use correctly, but is too exploitable by bad commanders and grief players. Either way, as long as tourny mode goes untouched, I'll be happy.

Maybe to even things out add a gorge munch ability, where a gorge can eat a stucture to get back resources... well, not really to even things out, it would just be fun. I find recycling most useful when I drop a phase in a place where marines get stuck, so I'd hate to lose that ability. However, it sounds like Flayra's comments were rather vague, so I don't think any recylce-lovers need to panic or anything.

My gripe with recycling is how a commander can essentially get half res back from a structure even if the aliens are JUST about to destroy it.

How about linking the resources returned with the health of the structure at the time the recycling takes place?

i wish aliens had an equivalent stupid gorge teammates putting webs in bad places frustrate me, and there's no way to get rid of their webs

how about an alternate usage of welder, and it requires 2 people to dismantle? thats kind of how they did it with q3f and it worked well

since you cant right click, i dont know how you could do it. maybe E when holding welder, as long as a teammate does the same thing w/in 10 seconds, will recycle it?

Aliens need recycle structure for the times when NSPlayer goes gorge and builds a sensory chamber with his first 10 res or offense chamber in some pointless location.

good god, could you imaging the damge one noob or a jackass could do with a welder if they could recyle with em???
Bad enough you get looser coms who recyle every thing at first sight of lossing

Too difficult. Maybe commander marks it as recycleable or something, and then it would be possible for anyone to weld-recycle it.

Those 3 are reasons why recycling is bad. Getting back RP just because you don't need a spot or one skulk snuck in and is killing it is silly. You should be punished for that, not be getting back RP. As for relocating, it would make it occur less, so aliens don't have to go base hunting in the vents as much

Only good reason. I would just add in some code. If spawn + get stuck, auto recycle spawn/phase. (If that's possible of course)

I have YET to have recycling work once for me in a game. It never works. The recycle button goes away after I click it, but I don't get resources back, and the building stays there.

It does work, it just takes a while. Be patient.

Just put a 30-45 second timer between the time the comm clicks recycle and the structure actually recycling.
• LucidLucid Join Date: 2002-12-11 Member: 10534Members, Constellation
comms that give up and recycle the IP's are no reason to get rid of recycling. The same comm could easily drop 4 comm chairs at the beginning of a game. Should we get rid of comm chairs? Ofcourse not. It really doesn't happen that often anyway (on the servers I play on anyway. maybe it's different elsewhere)

In reply to unbuilding buildings for it to be recycled.
Comm accidently places a unbuild wp and they unbuild it for no reason.
Other than that good idea.
But i would have to say i like Terrs i dea the best. Depending on the building health is how much res u get back.
If not that leave as is.

For the comm spamming comm chairs, why don't they just don't allow you to build a comm chair in the first few moments of the game and when you do build a comm chair you can't build another one for a certain amount of time so marines can eject a bad comm when they see one and not lose all of their resources.

How is that any different to the comm accidentally clicking recycle under the current system? Hardly something i see happen alot.

I'd personally think that the commanders ability to recycle the infantry portals and end the game is a good one. Its basically the ability to concede victory to the aliens without the long dragged-out ending. Its a difference of philosophy between the two sides, aliens don't have this ability... ie they never give up.

I recycle IP all the time. When I get in a comm chair, and the previous comm has totally screwed everything up, sometimes its nice to have a the ability for a fresh start. Especially when its obvious the aliens are going to make you wait 20 min while they all evolve into ono's before they are going to finish the obvious conclusion....

Hell, and here wa sme thyinking recycling amounts gotten back WE'RE based on health of building when it was recycled. Do they get them all back if the building is destroyed? i.e. I'm chomping on a res tower, it hit's red, it starts recycling but I klill it 5 chomps later, do the marines still get 22 res back? (Please god make it not so)

just add a cancell-recycle button, so if a comm starts to recycle everything at base, you just eject him, get in and cancell it.
• Canadianmonk3yCanadianmonk3y Join Date: 2002-11-13 Member: 8465Members
There are two views of recyclying in a negative manner. IMO
I dont count morons recycling the whole base because that does not happen on good servers, and if it does, those people get banned quickly.

1. Comms can recycle RTs and other stuff before aliens can finish destroying them.
A. Make a timer or something, so that a building stops being recycled if it has been attacked in the last five seconds, and continues to stay stopped as long as it is still getting hurt.

2. Comms should be forced to live with bad and accidental placement because getting resources back is lame.
A. Make a destruct button, which is essentially the same as recycle, but it does not give any resources back.
