I'm on cable, and it's been absolute garbage over the past 3 weeks. I'm not pleased.
First off, their routers are seriously messing up outgoing packets. About 25% of the time I browse these forums (or just about any web page), I'll get a 404 from anywhere except the website I'm browsing!! For example, I got a 404 from a university website yesterday, even though I've never visited that website before. I'll get them from Google, business sites, personal sites, etc. Gah.
Secondly, their servers go down/reboot/crash at least twice a day. One of those times is always at around 2am.
Third, I don't think I've been in a full game (start-to-finish) of NS for quite a while. I frequently get that warning: connection error just as things are getting good. Sometimes it bounces back and I end up dead, but I'll usually just quit and hope to find another game.
Fourth, DSL service range ends a few minutes walk up the street. It's cheaper, it's faster, and it's more reliable. And I'm about a dozen houses too far down the street to get it.
The service usually works pretty reliably during the day, but goes straight to hell once people get home from work/school.
I'm on AT&T cable in Dallas, TX, and it can suck it. When it's not dropping out, I'm usually getting bad pings.
At least it's free because it sucks
Lately though it's been ok - i think they opened up a new node for my apt complex.
go to college, 10MB/s (that's our LAN speed, since the Inet would probably go faster if we had Gigabit ethernet, meh.)
[edit]oh yeah, we all have wireless cards in our laptops, but there are lan connections everywhere anyways. Wireless is too slow for me, and sucks if you host a server.[/edit]
I am in college. But, my school had the brilliant idea putting up a campuswide wireless network instead of running a gigabit connection around the whole campus. It's cool for laptops and all, but not for desktop machines.
Cable in Canda, $39.99/month. No limits (speed or data transfer). Trust me, I tested them
DSL at home, T1 at the school, where my pc is the most of the time, but at the school there's always someone who's dl, so i rarely get a good ping here.
