Not play games on XP? Every game I have installed works, I have not heard of a game that doesn't work (that ins't too old of course )

What you need is the application compatibility patch, located here

And WinXP does not suck. It will finally eliminate Win98/ME, which is a greater legacy than any OS has ever had. Down with 24-bit OS's.

XP can't run Daggerfall.

What they should have done is rewritten DOS to be 32 bit, rather than eliminating it.

Ahem. The NTVDM (NT Virtual DOS Machine) in WinNT/2k/Xp is 32-bit. The problem is that your DOS games try to directly control hardware devices, which the NT HAL does not allow. DOS games have no problem whatsoever with the NT emulation, until they try to make hardware do their bidding.

DOS (which most of you are pretty much too young to have ever really experienced in large quantities), was to put it mildly, a hunk of ####.

Pshh... I worked with DOS back in the late 80's. When I was 6. I -love- DOS. DOS r0xx0rz j00. My favorite command? dir/w/a/s. In the root directory of a 40GB drive filled to the brim. Yeah.

(Also taught myself QBASIC back in the third grade. [deity] I miss DOS. *sigh*)

and... i learned myself qbasic when i was 12. Although i forgot most of it :S.
it ruled everything. it was when you could ALWAYS rely on you OS, knowing it would not crash...

win 3.1 is sort of Dos it was pretty stable and used the DOS primitives (don't know if i can say that in english like this ) hell 3.1 wasn't even an OS windows 95 isn't bad, windows 98 is pretty buggy but userfriendly. Win 2000 is the way to go for serious work on a computer, can't say anything about XP cuz i never even saw it and I'm nto sure it'll run on my comp :/

AAAARRRRGGGG!!! I HATE WIN XP! I HATE THIS DAMNED THING!

Once you install it on a computer, there's no way to get rid of it, except reformat. Sometime you want to change your config but then the damned piece of crap-software from hell don't want to let you do so or simply won't show the options. Anyway, that's not my probem, I don't use it.

I also heard people say each time you install software, the next time you connect to the internet it sends the software's name and id to microsoft.... I know that's probably not true but if it is...... ME HATES WINXP EVEN MORE!

Not true. The first time I installed it, I realised that some of my devices (like my gfx accel card) didnt work under XP, so I uninstalled back to 98. No reformatting needed - it uninstalled itself.

Odd, it shows -me- the options.

O well, maybe that's just me getting even more insane and paranoid, but so far, I hated winxp. About uninstalling maybe it's due to other things (maybe my hardware) or maybe it's because I haven't looked much since I was too mad.

Also, sometimes I wanted to er...... *play* with different system files but it wouldn't let me as in win98.

As an engineer, I really do get frustrated when people make cryptic statements like 'I had problems with X OS so I got rid of it'.

Learn! Use your issues as a way to pick up experience in the best career you could ever have. I have never spent one day getting official training on computers and networks. I taught myself, prepped myself for certs, and learned from my mistakes. I am now happy and don't have to worry about money ever again. Trust me...

The only annoying thing I've come across with WinXP (Pro) is having it be VERY unstable if you don't reinstall after putting in a new mobo. Of course, I'm sure this is the case with any OS, but so far it is the only problem I've encountered with XP. It runs solid as a rock for me, normally.

I suppose I should've responded to this earlier, but DOS was my legacy! Sure, it has no capacity for multitasking and isn't pretty like all the new OS'es, but man could it do stuff. And it never crashed! You could do all the QBasic or C programming and play as much Wolf3d and Doom as you wanted without worrying about invalid instructions! And do you REALLY need to do anything more than program in C and play Wolf3d? I didn't think so.

Point taken...

The hard part was recovering that last couple K of RAM so your game would start. Pretty stable after the 3 hours of config.sys tuning.

Saying XP uses too much RAM is like saying your Cadillac uses too much gas. You're getting a better platfom, but there's a piper to be paid. See above for real RAM issues, where you're screwing around with EMM386 settings all weekend.

I multitasked in DOS... I'd run CDPLAY and then go have fun in QBasic. I loved my DOS computer... I was the KING of batch files. (:

considering that i've been working with XP since its pre-release and i do have knowledge of computers, i even do tech support, please accept what i say here.

XP is definitely the best windows yet. it lacks some in the networking, and is slightly less stable than 2K, but it makes up for everything in all other areas.

as for not being able to run certain programs... try running in compatability mode. this will fix 90% of problems. also, NT can duel-boot, meaning that you can put another OS on the same drive and boot that to do certain things...
