Why is it that I can recycle an arms lab but still spawn jetpacks and heavy armor? This cant possibly be a feature. Flayra worked on EE (Empire Earth) and it was never that way...
Apparently in this game, structures are not required to build equipment....they are just required to make the structures that make the equipment....example:
In starcraft if i want to make a battle cruiser I need:
Stargate
Attached control tower
science facility
Attached physics lab
If for some reason I loose one of those 4, I cannot build a battlecruiser. It has been this way in every single game of this genre. Warcraft, AOE, EE, C&C etc. etc. I find it rather odd that I can build an arms lab, then build a prototype lab, and instantly recycle the arms lab and still be able to drop jetties. Also, once i have finished upgrading the marines, I recycle the arms lab because it serves no purpose.
I think that if you want to spawn your marines Jetpacks and HA, then every building that it took to get those jetties/ha should be up and running.

An analogy would be a Lair being required to build a Queen's Nest - if your Lair is destroyed, I'm pretty sure you can still spawn queens.
Another take is that Jetpack and HA are upgrades, not "units" - if you build a barracks and an engineering bay, and then the barracks is destroyed, you can still research weapon/armor upgrades.
By your logic, if we lose all our inf portals, then we shouldn't be able to drop anything from the armory, or proto lab. Since an inf portal is the prereq for everything in the marine building tree.
And recycling the arms lab after all upgrades is fine with me, since they are static upgrades. If the aliens take out your arms lab, you don't lose your upgrades (which is the way it should be). So, why should recycling be any different?

Thats exactly right. And no, you cant make queens without a queens nest. Like you cant make ultralisks without an ultralisk den, you cant make mutas or scorges without a spire, you cant make guardians without a greater spire, and you cant make defilers without a defiler mound. Likewise if you lose your hive, you <i>still</i> cant make guardians, even if you have a greater spire. If you lose your spawning pool, you cant build A LOT of stuff either. No towers, no upgrades, no lings or hydras, you have to have the base building erected in order to make something at the top of the tech tree. Its only logical.
I understand both sides of the situation. But considering gameplay value, I dont think I have a winning argument. When I played, I always thought it was weird that I could recycle something that was the basis for something else...It's just gone against all tradition in that type of game genre.

If it means that much to you, think of it like this:
The arms lab tech is only required to produce the protolab building itself, and plays no part in the production of a jetpack. Now the system makes perfect sense and you should have no complaints ;)
Incidentally, this cropped up in wc3 in certain places. You don't always need all the necessary tech in order to produce something. For example, if you have an arcane sanctuary, but you've lost your keep and have no town hall, you can still produce sorcs - a tier 2/3 unit.
PS. "Rage against the pepsi machine" wouldn't happen to be a Derik Smart referance would it? :)
