Some New Virus...

tons in my email
Every second message in my email now seems to be from some guy I dont know, with a random name apparently. Some of them have said stuff like "Important copyright notice information, dont delete". I cant remember the others, but its always something random that you know you didnt ask for. When you open it some of them have an EXE and a jpeg, both randomly named. Others have had a .bat and a .doc, I know all 4 can contain viruses. Watch out for these, I dont know the name. Maybe someone else could assist here

As a good general rule, if an email from someone you don't know has an attachment with a .exe, .bat, .com, .pif, or even .doc or .xls extension, delete it.

Also, don't use email readers with security holes *cough* Outbreak Express *cough*, or use that abominable Windoze "feature" of "hide file extensions for known file types", since that's what lets viral email call its attachments "foo.jpg.exe" and have it show up on your screen as an innocent-looking "foo.jpg".

Heh new virus's these days...all you have to do now is click on it or "highlight" the email without even opening it and your automatically infected....

Like I said, don't use email readers with security holes. An email virus that's able to execute a program simply by having you highlight the header is exploiting some tremendous bug in your email program - something special it does when you highlight it. Outlook Express does such things (or at least did, they might have patched it by now), hence the name "Outbreak".

Though why you'd want to use Outbreak in the first place is beyond me - it's complete and utter bloatware.

Jus set your virus scanner to screen your emails. And like b4 jus dont open attachments unless you know where it came from.

ok, just b/c I am again sick and tired of ppl raging on msoft simply b/c

look, outlook had some SERIOUS bugs in it, and yes it was targeted, you know why? b/c ppl are fn tools and try to ruin the rep of Msoft

I am not saying I like it (I have to ssh to my mail servers so I just use putty any way) but yah know what, for some people outlook is realy fn good, t is GREAT for small buisnesses that do some stuff electronicly and just have lots of emails that need to be kept track of.

I will make the random jokes at MSoft, but still, it is getting silly

just as a comparison, when OSX first came out, it was as buggy, if not worse then many msoft stuff, hell doing a very simple thing to itunes could basicaly wipe your hard drive

and the mac version of Aim had a serious bug that could flat out crah your comp, and you know what, no one took advantage of these

oh, and by the way, if you can find me any where that says that the CURENT versions of outlook have security holes I would like to see them, yes I know that outloock started off VERY bad and was a horrible thing to use, but now it is perfectly reasonable to use it.

    meh what even

oh well, I am just getting sick and fn tired of idiots who think it is cool to rip into msoft b/c they are a big corporation

Than has some good points, but the mac community doesn't have as many #$%wads, so that's why I stayed with it for so long.

Alas, Halflife, how you have turned me to the dark side.

umm, actualy it is not Msoft users that generaly program these viri, it is the ANIT corprat america feeling that is so FN STUPIDLY popular on the internet that causes people to target windows stuff

look, the amount of BUG and errors in linux stuff is just sorta funny (please note I still prefer using linux for work, but nothing else), the reason why problems in linux stuff is not exploited is b/c they would rather screw over windows users hen windows users

Boy, did you pick the wrong ********************* forum for that.

For the record, automatically executing email attachments is more than a bug. It's a misfeature of grotesque proportions. Elm does not do this. Pine does not do this. Eudora does not do this. I don't think even Netscape, which is crappy in its own special way, does this. You need to have spent most of your youth huffing Krazy Glue to sit there designing an email product and think "hey, I know, let's make it so the sender of the email can write scripts that will automatically be executed when the recipient looks at them! That'll be really convenient, and I can't imagine it ever being used for evil!"

MS makes a fairly decent OS, but they need to stick with what they're good at. Don't even get me *started* on VSS.

I use Outlook Express, and have done for years. I have not once had a virus appear in my inbox, and I get on avarage one piece of spam email every 4 months or so. All it takes is changing a few settings within Outlook, and being careful about your email address and where it gets.

If other people didn't exist, we would have no problems with anything. Apart from being born, but that would just solve another problem.

That was even worse than your post before that. I didn't even bother reading until I saw the "*"s stop. I'm only rude because I am SO dang sick of people screaming and yelling in pretty much another language. It's unpleasant for the reader and just shows that there's a downfall in intelligence. If you wrote like that in school or on the job, you'd get bad grades/be fired. Why should you make any exception when on a computer? Because we can't give you a bad grade or fire you? It makes it look like you have sub-average intelligence when you type like you're a blind man with no fingers. I apologize for the rudeness in this and my previous post, but I've had enough. Please, think of others when you post. I, for one, hate having to "translate" posts, and I'm sure others do. By the way, I don't see how the post was "toolish".

EDIT: On a more on-topic note, I've never had a virus in my email and I use Outlook Express.
