Advice?
As you can see, I am not good at drawings, nor am I good at skinning.

Now, I know HOW TO skin, it's just that I don't have the tools TO SKIN. Is there any easy yet powerful tools (programms) out there to aid my skinning?

Thanks for your time,
-Sid

i use a combonation of photoshop and PSP.... both not quite *cough* you know *cough*.... but i'm a student, i can't even afford to THINK about being legal...

a free one is MSPAINT, and IrFanView, the second, you can't actually create things (no brushes or things like that) but it's got all the photoshop effects (if you ever want to use them)

one thing a lot of new skinners dont realize is.... indexed color = bad...
    Image>mode>RBG color...

    Paint all u want

then switch it back to indexed color

    image>mode>indexed color

and save it as an 8-bit bmp....

RBG lets u do so much more than indexed

Try The Gimp. It's a completely free, ultra powerful program for Linux, but you can also run it on a PC. Search The Gimp on Googel.

Ah yes - I've heard good things about the Gimp. Also, I thought PSP was free, in a kind of everlasting trial version way.

It took me forever to find out the color mode thing, I spent a long time in the help file wondering if it was talking about bit depth per pixel or for the whole image. Then I figured it out somehow, would have been nice if when the 8-bit toggle was dimmed on the save dialogue, it gave some sort of hint...I dunno..why?

Oh yeah, and it didn't help that there is a black and white line-art mode called "bitmap."

Hows this for my first skin? (all I did was reskin the nose and add a gradius. Red nosed grenades for easy tracking.. well is it good for a first try?)

    Getting better. But it's "gradient."
  • NeptalidNeptalid Join Date: 2003-01-06 Member: 11951Members
The sad thing about the grenade nose, is that the mesh for it isn't continuous. So no 3-click perfect gradient tools

I fixed that problem. I made a gradient that got lighter at one side, and it was seriously messed-up looking. It would go from dark red to pure white and look really wierd, so I put the light part int he middle and it looks awesome! Here's the .mdl file if you wanna download it...
