Well, the sound had no noticable difference, the ambient and action sounds all seemed to be there and sounded fine. Then I had a repeating sound crash, where the screen hangs and the computer no longer responds to input and manual reset was required. This crash happened once more. Then the next crash was just a freeze, no annoying repeating sound, also required a manual reset. Then the repeating sound crash happened again, but this time a BSoD happened when I hit the ESC key. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- An exception OE has occurred at 0028:C0031A54 in VxD ---. This time I took a different route, and used Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart the computer, which seemed to work fine.
Now I'm going to use the backup NS config.cfg and edit it to try out Plan/Test E: s_a3d "1" and cl_musicvolume "0". Or is Plan/Test E supposed to be s_a3d "1", cl_musicenabled "0", and cl_musicvolume "0"? I'm not sure which is the right test, so I'll wait on that until MonsieurEvil clarifies that point.
BTW, thanks for posting civilian, maybe my testing can bring a solution for both of us.
Okay, no response, so I just stopped the tests, and will being setting it back to the backup config.cfg
Well, I tried playing NeverWinter Nights, and it was crashing all the time. Save game, crash game, reboot computer, repeat. Ugh, this had to be a hardware issue somehow, so off to the computer shop it went. It was under warranty, so no cash out of my wallet. Well, they ran a large amount of tests on it, and ended up switching out the RAM and testing the new RAM a whole bunch of times. The nice tech at the shop mentioned using 3DFX to test it, I think that is the Onion thing. Well, it was crashing in the test with the RAM that was there before, but the new RAM didn't crash the computer during tests.
Bottom line seems to be, if you are having similar problems to mine, it could very well be bad RAM. I hope this has helped somehow, now go fill some aliens with fast moving projectiles.
[edit]Oh hey, thanks for all your help MonsieurEvil, hope you are having fun![/edit]
I only just wandered accross this thread and RAM/file corruption was on my mind after teh first couple of posts - I read all the way to the end in case someone had already suggested it and now I find I completely wasted my time Glad you got your problem sorted, btw unless your pc has onboard agp graphics (and it shouldn't if you said you wanted in upgradeable) you should have no problem upgrading to a GeForce4MX. A GeForce3Ti200 will actually do more and probably perform better though. Just check the motherboard manual to see what type of AGP port it's got. I wouldn't recommend ATI cards for games, but they are great for mpeg!

I'm always on Now We Donce and Nano-Gridlock, and often on a l i e n a t i o n. I used to be on Coronas in Space all the time, but they went away for a bit... I'll keep an eye out for ya.
