Darwin Didn't Have This In Mind
Those disappointed that Command & Conquer Renegade wasn't the hybrid that some were expecting can soon see what might have been in the Natural Selection mod for Half-life. Where Renegade shifted the C&C universe into first-person shooter territory lock, stock, and BFG, Natural Selection moves in the other direction. Lead designer Charles "Flayra" Cleveland and the rest of his 14-man team are crafting a multiplayer mod that keeps the first-person perspective but changes gameplay from that of a standard shooter to an eccentric real-time strategy game pitting space marines versus aliens. One player on the marine team serves as the commander, who has access to a base, a top-down view of the map, and typical real-time strategy functions such as resource production and tech research. The commander also issues orders to units, who are of course being controlled by other human players. Natural Selection was entering its final playtest in early March, and it is hoped that the mod will be available for download at the official website by the time you can read this. Also by that point, it's hoped that the development team's webmaster will have reconsidered the use of tiny grey text on a black background.

Tiny grey text, um... look everywhere and you see it coil.
As for the article, Monse was telling me about it, Im a bit disappointed it's receiving the "odds and ends" area of the magazine, when it is a lot more than that. Oh well, some publicity is better than none I guess! And I wish they hadn't used such an old screenshots, with the text commander buttons, green circles, ugh

I'm sure there will be more "sufficient" coverage of the game once it's actually released, Comp.

Yeah, I re-read after I posted and figured it out. I guess I just don't see it as all that small... those people at CGM have their resolutions too high! Anyway, look at the SMRT guy! Whee!

I remember MonsE saying "Darwin didn't have this in mind" and then getting cut for an excess flood in IRC. Now I know what he was talking about. This is great. If that's the screenshot in the magazine, that alone will rake in loads of interest, even as old as it is. I know that I'm more drawn to pictures than articles.

I just hope the forums won't get full of newbies or people who just don't look at the FAQ. I don't wan't the first 20~ topics "What's a bob?", "Where can I download this mod?" or "When will it be released?" .

Very cool. Someone ought to correct them on the "release date" though. Or we will have FAQless newbies spamming the forums.

Guess that's the fate of all great mods.

Congrats anyway, I've no idea how big the CGM is, but I'll simply guess that NS just got another of those big PR boosts it deserves.

Never had problems with the grey on black writing. And it's nice to know that NS is getting around. Remember we'll be able to go, "Back in the old days before there was even a playtesters, I was here!"

In theory, popularity brings n00b lamers. However the flipside says that complex mods will attract n00b lamers and l33ts, except the complexity scares the n00b lamers eventually whereas the l33ts stay because there ummm "l33t".

Also, even if the forum is drowned in n00bs, popularity=servers.
