I'd suggest ESCing to Menu, then going back in. I get a similar thing you see when I TAB out, and I solve it by ESC & back again.
Hope this helps.
I just....dont know what to do.....
*EDIT*
I doubt this will change anything...but when I lose the sound....my frame-rate goes to hell. Its goes to like....3 frames a sec! anyone heard of something similar?
pull up the task manager (ie cntrlaltdell) and look at the processes tab, see what app is sucking your memory, record the name. Repeate a few times, if there seems to be some sorta task that sucks your mem, try killing it, or figguring out what it is and killing it before HL starts.
This is more in response to the random FPS drop, so it realy is just a crap shoot in the dark <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
tbh though diasable and TSR type progs you run, anti-virus, e-mail, IRC, real media, kazaa, everything so the only icon you have in the taskbar is the volume control and Start>>Programs>Start up is cleared completly.
You may have to temporarily uninstall firewalls and virus scanners to clear them from memory properly.
that will have eliminated software conflicts (more or less) so long as you clear every unessessary task from PC. Hit ctrl+alt+del and take a look at which tasks are running, copy them here and what OS you have just to be sure.
If it still hangs then you should look at DirectX, run dxdiag and go through all the tests. Finally do you play other games much? If you have a selection of similar games and it happens on all then disable legacy support of your soundblaster and check for and IRQ conflcts/overlaps.
If it is purely a Half-Life issue then have a look in the audio config properties of HL and NS before you mess with all this and disable all the extra features, cd music, high quality sound etc...
