Lerk Problem

Anyone else notice this?
Yesterday I was playing and noticed something that became really apparent as marines if you're fighting aliens that are lerk crazy. This game had been going on for awhile. Marines had 2 hives, but the aliens seemed to have an endless supply of res, even though marines controlled most of the map. The aliens constantly went lerk. Pretty much every player except a gorge or two. Even with full upgrades, a carapaced lerk is really tough to kill, but that's not the problem. Chasing a lerk is. When they fly away, most of the time a lerk's entire body will clip right into a wall or ceiling, almost making them vanish for a short time. This makes it extremely hard to aim properly at a lerk. Not to mention when they are flying, the model also has a real strange animation. I'm not entirely sure if this is an engine problem, or a model problem, but I was wondering if this will get fixed some time? Yeah I guess you can get used to it as sometimes you can still spot part of a wing, but to say it's annoying would be an understatement.

Oh. My. God. The only thing easier to kill is a babbler.

I dunno...those babblers are pretty hard... i mean, when they get stuck on the floors and all it scares me pretty good and I run away.

To quote someone in a recent game...

"Oh no, Babblers! I fear their terrible pathfinding!"

Truthfully, the Babbler should be a separate alien life form, not just a brainless Skulk. The design could be similar, but smaller, and.. well.. different

As for lerks, the only aspect that makes them tougher to kill (for me) is the fact that they can fly. Duh. If airborne, they can ROCKET away from you, and a good lerk can be evasive enough to get out of nearly any situation. Even so, they're not all that hard to kill.

The lerk is under the effect of the "Control-Related Inverse Durability Rule", which basically means that it is a lot easier to die as one than to kill one.
I've emptied my Primary and Pistol clips at a lerk from point blank range, I switch to knife and get at least 1 swipe in before he kills me with bite. This has happened to me many times.
I die as lerk so often that I don't bother with it, unless everyone else is fade and no one is lerk, and I don't have enough res to go fade.

The other major sufferer of the CRIDR is the Onos. If an onos storms into your base he is helluva tough, if you, as an onos, storm into a marine base you will die within half a second.

Or maybe I just suck with those two aliens, and at killing those two aliens...

this is true... are you 56k?

if onos storms my base he will kill 40 marines.. If i become onos and storm a base i will kill 3 marines and immediately explode

No, cable... rarely over 200 ping, usually under 100. (Except on hera, which is ~200 in the beginning and ~350 endgame on most servers)

Gah! I know EXACTLY what you're talking about! And it has nothing to do with connection, I'm on a T3. But isn't that weird? It shouldn't take that much skill to play as onos when you think about it...

Although I would love to see a different babbler model, I think they look like skulks for a reason.

What I'd like to see as a babbler model is more of a big chompy mouth with feet... Like those windup chattering teeth, only alien. Big green mottled eyeless head, great big mouth with chompy teeth, and 2 (or 4?) little legs with big feet on em... about knee-high to the marines. They should also jump around alot. Maybe I'm just infatuated by the "squeaks" from HLDM, you know, the grenade-weapon aliens that track and bite and explode?

And they should Babble!!!!! They should be talking their little heads off, babbling, growling, grunting, gnashing their teeth... making a noisy high-pitched din. Crowds of them should drive the marines nuts with their incessant chattering. That would give the marines something else to think about other than their "less than excellent" tracking. I mean, why not just call them "Quiets"?

But seriously, I think the babblers look like skulks for a reason. A real skulk or two in a crowd of babblers is not easy to differentiate. Skulking amongst the babblers is FUN! And probably it was simpler for the Dev Team to shrink a skulk and call it a babbler.

But I still think they should babble. Alot.

yah i noticed that the lerk seems to dissapear into ceilings sometimes.

i also have a habit of shooting wildly at a lerk and then getting jumped from behind by something and killed when the lerk was already dead anyway.

there are many animation problems with this game. many animations don't loop seamlessly. i think the only time i've seen the animations looking really good is when i get disconnected from the server.

similarly, the marines are good ONLY if you are on the alien team

a tip for killing lerks - their wings do not have hitboxes, only the actual "bone" parts of the wing, the joints.
• hoju2hoju2 Join Date: 2002-11-04 Member: 6873Members
Yes it is very annoying when almost the entire Lerk body is hidden in the ceiling, but we're just going to have to what for a patch of some sort. I haven't seen it enough to really consider it that big a problem, but with 1.01 coming out soon making Lerks more popular, then this issue will probably gain some noteriety (sp).

Lerks are supposed to be hard to kill...or rather, hard to HIT, but relatively easy to KILL (once you can hit them).

The biggest problem I see right now is insane-magical-flying-fairy-jetpack-marines. It is a LOT harder to kill a jetpack marine than a lerk especially when a com is spamming health all over.

I am getting suspicious of several NS players everyday. Either as Alien while some marines fire their LMG with the accuracy of the pistol as well as being a marine pumping 20+ rounds into a skulk and seeing him still being alive and biting me to death all of a sudden with one bite and me having full health.

Hmm, yeah, I was flying with supersonic speed (i.e. the fastest lerk speed you can imagine) and he manages to track me perfectly! Utter bull plop! Could've been a fluke though.

One question: does the Lerk bite do 50 or 75 damage per bite?

Some say its 75, but the manual says 50. It would take 3 bites to take down a marine with 50, but it feels like 75. Dunno.

I've come to the conclusion. Everyone else that kills me is a hax0r. "HAX!" I'll say after I am killed. He'll respond with "wtf?" I'll be like... "YOU KILLED ME! HAX!" Just the saying "hax!" after you die will make you feel much better!

And as far as I'm concerned, EVERYONE hax when I'm not a skulk.
• HannebambelHannebambel Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 5416Banned
Well to me it is vice versa.

Everyone hax when I am a skulk. I have better chances killing a marine as Gorge with health spray. Last time I killed 2 marines at once with Healthspray. One of them must have been injured before though.

Lerk bite does 75.

As an adendum to this discussion, will we see an updated manual for version 1.1?

I was sittin in umbra with adren, regen, and cloaking. Marine walked with an LMG and pwned me...THROUGH THE UMBRA, i was amazed...
• ZERGZERG Join Date: 2003-02-04 Member: 13132Members, Constellation
Umbra sucks now. Its less helpful for the lerk itself, but still good enough for the fades. This is why I just fly in and start spiking and causing havoc in general.
