However, these should be reduced in NS 1.1. Try and aim for at most 500. Unnamed lights do not count, IIRC.

Not much of a secret then, is it?
Does a Server send the client every State of all entities?
How much Traffic cause Entities compared to leaf/vis or "shoot kill" traffic?
Therefore, things like particle systems, hives, trains, etc, cause a greater 'hit' on the server. 700 named point lights would be fine I think, but 700 particle systems would not.
the main problem is so many entitys get added during the game: every alien structure, every human structure down the the mines and webbing. then there is all the combat fx of all the offensives and turrets firing, ichor splatter.....it all adds up.
your map CAN problably compile with more - IIRC Merle once said the compile limit of possible total entities in a HL level was around 2048, but an NS map would lose playability long, long before that.

Damn. I didn't think anyone knew ...
Most of the hit would come from elevator systems and doors (which both need multiple entities to work properly).
