Just another look at the same...

Hold up if you're about to say, "It's too dark." I think I forgot to gamma correct these shots. It is brighter in-game.

Very nice!
The atmosphere is really great already, I can't wait to see this with particle systems in place. I can't really get a sense of scale from these pics though, and it seems a bit cramped.

and not at all cramped look at the top picture u can see on the right that it expands to a larger area

i dunno, it looks a little tight to me too. however, it looks real nice. great job here.

Wow. Nice. The tightness of the room will provide an advantage to the aliens. That's good.

ehm...an hive area must be infested... and to me it looks that the room is a bit small...i mean there's not too much florr to run on,and hive areas are combat areas,so they need space, for me

Low ceilings are good for aliens? Ok, if that's not a concern, then I like. Also, is the ceiling tall enough for a hive?

Looks nice! My only comment would be more detail on the thing in the middle there... it's the focus of the room, but right now it's big, blocky brushes and uninspired textures. Make it more interesting, and the room will be perfect.

my only concern with this is that the cieling defintly looks to low for a hive... i think you may have to drop the floor out and make it like a databank down there... a long fall so you die if you fall But otherwise it looks great!

Hmm, on the "cramped" feeling. It is just that, a feeling. I've designed the lighting and the outer walls to express exactly that. So, thank you! You'll be surprised how much space there is inside this room, but not so much that the level 1s lurking in there wont surprise you even more.

Will a hive fit? Almost certainly. I'm not sure how to get hives to spawn in NSTR2, so I can't say this as a matter of fact, however, the entity box is the size of a hive and fits in it's nook snugly. (Not pictured is the actual place of the hive, which does have the roof broken away showing pipes and junk as well as provides the hive with the additional 32 units of clearance.)

Yes, a bold marine could destroy the hive with his knife. I'm okay with this. His job will be hard enough just getting there.

Oh, and the mainframe resting in the middle. I'm pleased with that. Down the road I may add some pipes and hoses to the scene, but they are not needed. It fits the look I was going for very well. It is, after all, nothing more than a very large CPU. Such extreme computing power is needed for facilities such as Elysium. The effect should be just right with some heavy fog that drops from the vent above and "bubbles" down the sides of the CPU to rest in the recessed level below the catwalk.

The main thing I'm still not totally sold on here is the lighting. Please tell me what you think... more? less? spotlights? different color?

i assume your talking about the entity box for the hive. trust me, the actual hive is a lot bigger then it's entity box

I'll do some checking, but I can easily make it all work if there isn't enough room. Not something I'm too worried about.

its relatively easy to get hives to spawn in NSTR2 . . . i think you just have to put in an info_gampley (or whatever, i always forget which ont it is) and then choose the teams as aliens and marines. Then you just need a hive antity and some alien spawns.
• KilltoyKilltoy Join Date: 2002-03-28 Member: 358Members
Right... and that is what I expected. (and that is what I had done) The hive wasn't spawning because there wasn't enough room.

My bad. I did the stupid thing and instead of looking it up I asked one of the more experienced mappers who was in IRC with me. His answer was BS. I got played.

Oh well, everybody gets their one chace to be trusted with me. I'm always disappointed when someone burns it, but hey, I'd be a fool to think the whole world is honest.

Anyways, I did fix the height. I'm looking into if the new arrangement works. I'll post here if I end up having to do something drastic to the room.

Thanks for your input guys. I was ready to ignore the non-spawning hive and move on to adjacent rooms. Then I would have ###### some #### up. Your determined remarks about the height problem saved me a lot of work. Again, thank you.

Now I'm really ready to chalk up my first-ever hive as functionally done. I'll see about getting later updates posted over at the Hive, but I'll be sure to put links over here for ya.

I suppose that, before you get too mad, you should consider that this guy possibly also didn't really know how it worked, but kind of thought he did. Perhaps he was also misinformed.

Anyways, I would like to say that I liked how the room looked in those first screenshots. It's a shame that you'll have to be redesigning this room, but I have a feeling that it'll still contain the same general feel to it as it did before.

If you want all the hives to spawn, just put in an info_gameplay and set the initial alien hives value to however many hives you have. And if that doesn't work, just set the alien hive interval value to 1 second.

I really liek it kill, and it sure is a change from the cold blue former elysium, I realyl like that cramped feel, I hope you managed to keep it after raising the cieling , gj

I like the texing and lighting on that computer core in the middle, looks very ss2ish (A good thing). I hope the CO2 won't me so thick as to obscure the middle too much. Maybe you could make it liquid nitrogen to explain why there is no infestation on the centre core.

Can't wait to see it dimly lit with a greenish light and infestation all over.

Head over to the Hive to see how I fit that big alien goosack into the room. I took Cyanide's idea of a databank, but placed it above the CPU instead of below. The room is already one of the lower areas of the map.

Thanks for your comments and help. I'm moving on, and you'll be sure to see more over at the Hive as the map continues.
