Downloading Maps

Is there a better way...?
Hi there!

I have recently found that my fave pubs are using more maps than the ones I am used to, which is great. Except that when the gmae downloads them it usually takes almost forever and I occasionally find that the minimap doesn't work and that there might be other problems.

I am wondering if there is anywhere I can go that may have the maps there....? How do I install them into the game if I download them myself?

TIA

Nemir

mayberry should host zips instead of installs, since I can't d/l a map for upload to my server because I don't know what models or sounds it's adding or where...

after you download them, i suggest using download accelerator from www.speedbit.com ( if u need the crack email me ) then after downlading em put em in your ns/maps folder .

i think this automatic downloading of maps from the game server should be discontinued because it is pointless. it takes forever and it lags the server for people playing. what should happen instead is that the game server redirects people to the map download server instead. Valve needs to be told this.

valve has nothing to do with this really, it's how the HL engine was coded, and it's how it is, regardless of your personal opinion.
Either way with a reliable server, like the ones hosted on 100 Mbps lines, the lag is negligible and it only takes forever because there is no compression on the bsp files, and what seems like forever, really is only 5 or maybe at very most on some maps with many extra files, 8 minutes. Unless your on 56k, in which case good luck, bit if you've been paying attention, many places host maps so you can d/l them before playing on a server.

Isn't there a speedcap in place as well? I have tried to download a map from a friend on a 100 Mbps lan and it still took "ages".
But your right, if you find that you need to get a new map. Disconnect and download it from the web instead. That way you might get the map down before the game is over

Well there's probably a speed cap to avoid lagging the people that are playing on the server...

In any case, just download maps of the net, it only takes you away from the game for a fraction of the time you spend downloading maps from a server. The only maps I ever do that with is with gimmick maps like ns_missilecommand and ns_siege. They're small enough (and lack textures, in the case of siege) that they download quick.

the lack of textures in siege really makes no difference to the size of the bsp file. of course that is only in the case that there are no custom textures saved in the bsp file itself. most maps use the textures that belong to the mod and those are saved in a seperate file that comes with the mod and most of the maps then link to that file rather than have the textures saved in the bsp files themselves. i can't understand why the map-maker of siege uses only a couple textures.

We don't add any special models or sounds to the installs. They are all original from the mapmaker...

I was thinking of making a util one of these days that would require the server to keep a log of map CRC checks around. Then the util would see what map was needed, would find the most popular match on google, download it, unzip, check the CRC, and if not the same, try again.

    Alas, i haven't the skillz...

Just tell it to "install" to Desktop\NS\. Then that directory will have ONLY the files that it was extracting, and in their proper directories...
