Lcd Screen With Ns?

ZhangZhang Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 2477Members

Good for playing games?
I've been considering dropping down the cash for a 17" LCD monitor, probably the Dell Ultrasharp.
For the people who own an LCD screen, would it be bad for playing NS since the movement would cause a lot of motion blurring, or is it not so bad that it would not detract from my playing ablity?

And BTW, how good is a time of 25ms for the monitor's lag rate?

So in the end, is it really worth it to get an LCD screen to play games in general, or should I simply stick with my 17" CRT?

I have a LCD TFT screen (Phillips Brillance 150P) and there's no blur at all. Your screen must just have the TFT feature (it kills that blur).
You may see a little blur if you move *very* fast but it's really nothing.

And TFT screens are great for your eyes

Funny you should ask. I've actually been having lots of problems getting used to mine. A few days ago I bought a KDS Radius RAD-7C. It's not motion blur that I'm having problems with but gamma. The shadows are so dark it's hard to navigate around the level and the lights are incredibly harsh too. I'm using an nVidia GF2 MX400 and am in the process of trying various version of nVidia's drivers but each install requires a reboot. That gets old quick.

    Any suggestions Firestorm?

My brother has a gateway one. And it's caused him to stop playing the mod. It looks great and all, but there's a Contrast/brightness issue that causes most maps to appear too blended together to be playable. I won't say too "dark", but the contrast can't be set high enough to tell the difference between colors. Aka, it's very hard to see a skulk in a somewhat dark corner that a CRT player would be able to see easily. He has a generic intel graphics card, so I can't adjust gamma or contrast from outside the game. Basically, if you're going to buy one, buy a damn good one or don't waste the money. I have a CRT 19' Viewsonic flatscreen that is the best monitor I've ever seen. And it was only 150$.

ive got a sony sdm-v72w, and initially ns looked a little funny... but i find everything is just much sharper in general now. theres no problems with the monitor except i find to achieve the visibility in game of my old monitor ive gotta crank up the brightness to around 50. everything else looks great, especially in wide screen.

I'm pretty sure my KDS doesn't qualify as the best LCD money can buy. I bought it new for $350 off eBay because it was cheap and I really wanted to get the CRT off my desk for the space savings. On occasion I'll work from home and the difference between an older 17" CRT and this new 17" LCD is dramatic! I love it for text work and web browsing.

But for gaming, it's pretty subpar at the moment. With more and more people buying LCDs, I'm hoping that either the games or video drivers will start to compensate for this uneven lighting. For now, I'm back to using the very old nVidia 23.11 drivers. The newer ones all looked like wall hacks at some angles. It was really weird and just impossible to play. Some areas badly flickered too; the marine start on tanith, for one. The entire room flickered between black and normal lighting at about 2/second. Serious headache going on there, let me tell you.

Regarding NS, I have noticed, as have others, that the same maps are lit differently on different servers. I don't know if they have the gamma and brightness locked or it is actually different versions of the same maps that are just lit differently. Anyone know for sure?

It would also be interesting to know if any of the developers or playtesters are using LCDs and what setup they have found to be optimal.

I really don't have *any* problems.

BTW, you can change the brightness/contrast with the on-scren menu (the menu of the monitor).
And my monitor was a hi-quality one when I bought it.

I've been regulaly using two different 17" tft's, both 25ms and although they are not as quick as a crt I very rarely notice. If you see me in game as Eaglec[not@home] then I am playing on a tft. The lag/refresh speed of 25ms is important, some of the cheaper tft's (and even some of the pricey ones) have 45 or 50 ms and this is just not useable for most people,

So how do I calculate the speed of the refresh? Evidently KDS doesn't advertise their refresh rate...

Errr, nevermind. I found the response time listed at 35 ms on the Canada site although the USA site doesn't list it anywhere.
