Getting People To Listen To Com

PerfectOnePerfectOne Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 5497Members
I play on public servers, and my one big pet peeve is that people don't ever listen to coms. Regardless of if I'm coming or anyone else, marines have a tendency to do whatever they want.

So, short of joining a clan, does anyone have any ideas on how to get a mediocre team to listen to the commander? Among the server regulars there's no problem, but among the random players it's a BIG problem. Anyone know how to deal with it? Or are you just S.O.L. when you com a pub server?

Sorry if this has been done before, but I couldn't find a thread about it in forums.

    Well, even though there have been other posts on the topic. You pretty much can't do anything about it when you are playing online. There was one post in which we came up with a brilliant idea. You can slap the marines that aren't listening! Isn't it great? Just set the damage and slap away! It ought to get them to take a hint or leave. In either case problem solved. Only the commander would have this ability and if he abused it, well, he can still be voted out. Its a cool concept even though we probably won't get that particular feature.

    I don't know whats up with some of the marines these days, but I hope it changes for the better with 1.1

    Here's what I do:

    When I'm on my way to the comm chair, I check the players and assign teams. I tell them that if they're ever NOT with their team, I won't help them (but I will if they're doing something remarkably good, but they don't need to know that <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->).

    So some will go run off on their own, and the rest will stick with their assigned team. Lavish tons of equipment and goodies on the team, and don't even acknowledge the sucky rambos. Eventually they'll start working w/ the rest of the team because they want goodies.

    Be strict, but not bitchy. Give everyone a task (even if its just 'guard base'). Complement people when they do good, and make sure they know when they didn't do well, but dont rip them a new one when they fail. Shoot for the 'stern father figure' kinda thing: hard exterior but genuinely freindly on the inside. Thats really the best advice i can give. The US military has got it down pat with how your early drill instructors are mean and beat you into the ground, but as you progress in the training they get nicer and freindlier.

    And for gods sake, know what in the world you are doing.

    It is extremely frustrating isn't it? Today, I was commanding, we currently held 2 hives, from the start i had upgraded them to level 2 weapons, level 1 armor. We had an advanced armory and i was getting ready to gear up and end the game. However, Throughout the whole game, i had a critic. Not only that, but he was rather nasty despite my success. He bombarded me with racial obscenities and such. Next round, I had l3on ban him.

    Good Riddance.

    Most marines should start to learn that the more they listen the more succesful they are. That means, no fades, and plenty of goodies.

    I have noticed that in many pub games usually at least 70% of my team do what i order them to do.
    I give waypoints, order them to defend building, etc...
    But when i have upgraded HA and armory, nobody listens to me anymore. They think that they are immortal with HA/HMG and starts to "rambo" and get killed in few minutes. Then they respawn and start to ask more guns and other stuff. It is really annoying, because in many games when i have equipped almost a whole team with HA/HMG and still we doesn't have any change against fades. If they just stick together and obeyed my orders, we probably would won those games.

    Marines should realise that comms can see MUCH more than they can of the map <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I spend all the starting res on mines, the marines cry and realise theyll have to play really hard to win.

    The best way to hand out ha and hmg is to hand it out at once. Make it CLEAR what their objective is, yell at them to weld each other, and you should have a decent HA welding glob to clear out a hive with.

    That failing, you could always give that lone, godly rambo a jetpack and welder and have him weld the hives to death. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I commanded a team of rambos before. Some funny stuff, but I finally got them to listen by addressing most of them by name. These type of people usually assume someone else will do it or you're talking to someone else. It was a miracle that we won---the miracle of mines. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I listen to the comm, but I do have to assess the current situation and act accordingly. I'm not going to turn my back and leave it vulnerable to build something. A dead marine is a worthless marine.

    Hmm, where did I hear that before? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    yup stoney, it's cc alright.
    All screenies straight from the ns screenshot section. They finally updated it I guess, cause they all look current. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    A neat trick is that the comm is also a great gorge hunter. I don't know how many times I've spotted stupid gorges jumping around and firing off their spit while waiting in a hive. They don't realize that spit, like acid rocket, is a particle weapon... sigh... and with motion tracking, it becomes all to easy to spot unsuspecting gorges.

    <undefended gorge is subspace, guys>
    >roger<

    30 secs later....
    gorge: OmG haX0rz killed me off and knew where I was! ****!

    i scream into my mic, it really gets the job done, i mkae my marines fear me and they dont disobey. Failure is not an option. I never will help a rambo unless they had permission. And if someone dies doing something i told them to do then i dont complain but if they die while going against orders i let hell off on them.
