I'm in such a good mood today that I left out the "F".
Play. That's basically it.
You're more likely to learn better by playing games than you are by reading a lengthy list of "important things". At first, just follow others and see what they do (unless you're following the Gorge ).
1: This is not CS. Get used to it, make yourself at home 2: The commander is your God. When he says jump, you reply "how high, sir?". Seriously, listen to what he has to say. Even bad orders are better than no orders, and for a while you won't be able to tell the difference properly. 3: Don't go gorge. Trust me on this one. 4: Learn how the Kharaa resource system works. This is quite important, as well as explaining why you shouldn't go gorge. 5: Learn the terminology, as there's quite a lot of it and you need to know what people are talking about. 6: Just to emphasize, if the commander says over teamchat "PHASE THROUGH NOW!", he really means it. It doesn't MATTER if you don't have full ammo yet, it doesn't matter if base is under attack. Believe me, your commander KNOWS that base is under attack and has a better use for you elsewhere. Learn to trust the commander's judgement. 7: Remember who your commander is; you have to be able to identify when he's giving orders. 8: Ok, just in case you really don't want to read the manual: the commander is the dude in the chair who gives you orders. Yes, he can be anyone. Yes, he can be kicked out. No, you don't need any special ranks or anything. No, you shouldn't go commander until you get a feel for the game first. No, the kharaa don't have a commander. 9: If you're going to go Kharaa, stay as a skulk until you learn the ropes. 10: No matter which side you are, don't worry if you can't kill anything and get killed repeatedly, Kharaa especially. Playing as alien has a very steep learning curve, playing against good aliens is very difficult. 11: NS is WAY more team oriented than CS. If you fail to do your bit for the team, EVERYONE loses. If your base is under attack, it aint just a silly mission objective like "bomb the target" - if that base falls you either lose control of a critical location (allowing the enemy to get more powerful), or you lose resource nodes (meaning you can't get more powerful abilities) or you lose your ability to respawn and ultimately the game. If you go off and do your own thing, you WILL get killed and you will accomplish very little even if you don't. 12: I really mean it about the teamwork thing. Stay in groups - when you spawn, wait for someone else and stick with them. It's not just a good idea to stick together in NS - it's the difference between killing the enemy and getting torn open by a skulk.

Welcome to NS. Good luck!
