I think a finished resource node pays for itself in something like 2 minutes, so if you can defend it for that long it's definitely worth it if marines aren't that aggressive. Note that it'll take a marine or 2 at least 20+ seconds to take one out and a lot of them don't even attack resource towers anymore because they get attacked when they do. 2 minutes is not a long time, should it stay undiscovered or defended for 10 minutes... Well that's a lot of res. How are you going to win without taking chances and being aggressive?
Did you parasite the marines first? That would severely increase chances of instagorging working out.

The "ignore res towers" phenomonon was ingrained from the 1.03 days. Nowadays people are shouting for, "Kill all res nozzles you see!" because people realize that res is important. I would knife a res nozzle just to draw the aliens' attention away from the otehr group of marinws securing another location.
