Popup stopper Free version

If found that Popup stopper by panicware was a solid program. It has multi levels of blockage as well. I have mine set to max but at the default setting it gets the more annoying ads.

Mozilla is also a good browser to use with built-in popup blocking features ( http://www.mozilla.org )

If you use XP you can shut down the Windows Messenger real easy, just don't do it if your on a network (admins no like people fiddling with fiddly bits). Go to the start menu, click RUN and type SERVICES.MSC in the box. The resulting list is all the background stuff that XP uses on your system (lots of it, isn't there?).

Scroll down the list until you find the entry for Messenger. Right click it and select properties. Set it to DISABLED in the menu box and click apply. It will never work again unless you switch it back on or re-install XP.

Don't switch anything else off, you might cause yourself some problems.

    avant browser
That is a web browser, total size is about 2 megs or something because it uses internet explorers main files, it blocks all unwanted pop ups from opening, to allow a pop up that you want to open just hold shift, if the pop ups from a link you don't even have to do that, it allows multiple windows to be open in the same browser and to switch you just press ctrl tab, you can even set seperate start pages(multiple) that will open when you open avant browser, completely customizable with everything internet explorer has and more, never had an unwanted pop up in 2 years time

I say -> Try PopUp-Stopper, I am so not computer savy and that's what I use, all there is to do is download, and turn on or off. It takes very little computer knowledge. I have had no issues with pop-ups during game play or surfing, the only time you need to mess with it is you click a link on a site and a new window is supposed to open, it won't so turn off then on, and you are golden. It's a wonderful program!

i j ust added proxomitron to firebird for redundancy (and the shiny buttons) and it got rid of that one popup that firebird missed, also all flash animations must be clicked before they load (stupid flash ads) and my top forum search button works. (and a crapload of other anti browser-abuse functions)

POW! is also a good popup blocker, it has one problem I'm aware of (it freaks out and closes all windows, you'll have to reinstall it to fix that one.).

It seems theres a Google Toolbar out (which you can get from, gasp, google) that has a popup blocker, though I don't know how effective it is.

It's pretty effective, you can tell it to not block popups for some sites (IE: Popup PMs on the NS forums).

Hmm, how would I get Proxo to work if I'm running off of Cox High Speed Internet? I'm not on a Dial Up, Vurtual Private, or LAN network so how would I get into settings and set up the proxy filter? Hope someone knows, the flash ads are really getting annoying.

I didn't bother reading the replies to this thread because it's so long, but I suggest the fairly new Google Toolbar. It blocks almost everything, and is a togglable (By a button on the IE bar) popup blocker and Google search string bar at the same time. How can you lose? It just left BETA, and it's great now. And it's just a plugin, so you don't have to fiddle with stuff.

Why install various softaware or plug-ins or toolbars / whatever, if you can download the simple, small and effective Proxomitron? I don't want any additional toolbars, I don't want any plug-ins. I know this is a "stop the pop-ups" thread but I thought I'd add a nifty program I just found (I know I know, you found it 5 years ago "gg nub").

It's called Spybot. It seems to work pretty well. I'm now using Proxomitron, Adaware, and Spybot. If you want to know how to turn off 'Messenger' in Windows XP:

    Start - > Settings - > Control Panel (I use 'Classic' View).

Open 'Administrative Tools'. Now open 'Services'

Scroll down the list until you find 'Messenger'. Double Click it.

Change 'Startup Type' to 'Disabled', then click 'Stop'. Okay. Close windows.

    Fin.

Check again once you restart, though. It often turns itself back on the second time, but once you turn it off again, it stays off.

I also use Spybot : Search and Destroy. It's a better program because it doesn't just delete files, it cleans them.

A big shout out to the big M for this one! Microsoft of course adds some silly and useless feature into it is build into the windows NT kernal. Its an internal command. ANYBODY who has windows NT, 2000, or XP is by default running the messenger service. This just gets advertisers all giddy. They can send ads to folks, and they usually have no idea where they come from! Step in...

Actually, It's not useless. For businesses where there is a large LAN, the administrator uses the messenger feature to send notifications to employees, such as warning them to shut down their computers before some sort of LAN-synching mumbo jumbo. So, it has a use, but it really shouldn't be on by default.
