What causes habits? Why do we unconsiously do them? Whats your worst habit?

Well, mine is chewing on toothpicks. I have one in my mouth constantly, one time I even woke up with one in my mouth. My parents were worried at one point that I would **** myself, or swollow one, so they got me a new kind of toothpick, has a nice pine taste, round at one end, dullish flat thingy at the other, very nice, dont poke myself anymore. Its wierd, I can tell the kind of tree the toothpick was made out of by its taste, pine, birch, and many others. Some guy I know, who is really rich, uses REDWOOD toothpicks!! they taste so good!

There are some toothpicks that u can buy...they come in what looks like a matchbook, and they have 1 pointed end and 1 flat end (just less than 1/4" wide at widest). They're slighly minty and pretty darn good Though I don't remember who makes em...just that they come in a matchbook lookin thing. I used to chomp on those all the time because they = win.

Now my worst habit is Video Games...by far.

Drinking before you go to bed, to help you fall asleep is a bad habit. The alcohol DOES help knock you out, but the sugar in the drink then wakes you up an hour or two later

It's like cutting off your nose to spite your face. (that's a bad habit also!)

This was some time back. I used to quietly repeat to myself whatever I said out loud. I get fairly nervous talking out loud. My cousins used to make fun of me whenever I did that. It was then I realized that I did it the wrong way; I was supposed to say it to myself before I say it out loud. Unfortunately, my family thought I was schizophrenic (they thought I heard voices in my head) when I was just being nervous about talking out loud.

I tend to fill in words for other people when they're trying to get their idea across. I think it's rude because even though I already understand what they're talking about, I should show the courtesy to let them finish.

I snore. I hate it. It sucks.

I get mad real easily. Usually over little things. I try to hold my tongue and think about the consequences, but sometimes I lose control.

I don't know why I have such habits. Maybe from insecurity?

I don't really think I have any bad habits, but I guess that's because I'm kinda a biased party on the subject.

Now that I think about it.....I guess yelling out random things at completely innapropriate times would be considered a bad habit. For example, today I managed to yell very loudly "FORNICATION" during several serious conversations. I do that a lot.

Non-sensical, or... a reference to a classic song?

It is, after all, a teddy bear that beccons the young ones into the van.

I babble nonstop and I'm really jittery and fidgety alot of the time. I crack my knuckles and neck too, I ALSO can do the neck crack without touching it, AND my hands just by closing them fast. Oh and I have some sort of oral fixation (har har, come on kids, you know you gotta make fun of that one)...I'm constantly chewing on pens and other stuff, when I was little I chewed on a nintendo cord while I played (I bought ALOT of controllers, and got ALOT of shocks).

Oh and I don't know what kind of habit this is, but I was psychologically addicted to quite a few drugs for a while...but I'm off that, for the most part.

I pace. A lot. If I'm standing up and waiting for something, chances are that I'm pacing.

I also fiddles with my pen a lot in class, and tend to drop it at least twice every period.

I can start an endless discussion about any game that I've played or even heard about. My brother, a non-gamer, gets mad at me when I walk over and start talking at him.

no one really addressed what causes habits, but there are several leading theories, the one I buy into most is habits are caused by a lack of a neural chemical that prevents your nueral receptors from recieving the same message twice. When your neural transmitters fire, and your receptors recieve the message, they are supposed to produce a ceural-chemical blocker that prevents the same message from being recived a second or third time. Habits (mostly OCD) occur when there sint enough of the blocking chemical to stop the retrasnsmission of the message.

Habits of gratification (which are my worst ones) are alos cause by chemical reactions in the brain, but not caused by underproduction of the chemical blocker. I smoke herb before I go to sleep, and I cant fall asleep unless I smoke. Pot is generally not physically addictive (means THC doesnt replace essential chemicals like heroin and opium) but the instant gratification I get from it is mentally addictive to the max.

Seriously, I could probably fill a notebook listing my own habits. Here's a few (in no particular order).....

- drumming on the keyboard with my thumbs while listening to music (only while pre- or post-typing)
- if I'm using the mouse, I'll drum on the mousepad instead
- cracking my toes, fingers, wrists, knees, ankles, and/or neck -- very bad habit that I'm mostly rid of
- pacing -- especially if I'm bored or waiting for something/someone
- checking to see who's signed in on MSN and/or ICQ
- refreshing the NS forums to see if any new posts/replies are up -- I'm usually listed as an active user for most of the day
- lightly grinding my teeth -- very bad habit I'm trying be get rid of

Sadly, I've done every one of those in the past few minutes. Every time I'd do one of the habitual things, I'd add it to the list.

Here's another one that I do in game: I switch between weapons. Constantly. I have the two side buttons on my mouse set to switch between my sidearm and primary, and all I have to do is slide my thumb along both of them to instantly switch between pistol and rifle. I do this a LOT in CS, especially when sniping. I just love the little *swoosh-click* noises the guns make
