----wow, ok here's the low down on wings 3D----

most 3D modeling programs are interface-based.... this program ties all your interfaces into your mouse...

it's always "click" somethign "click".... i've never clicked soo many times....

while MS3D has their buttons on the right side of the screen, and Max has theirs on the top and right... Wings 3D has NONE of those... i guarentee that if you've been modeling in other programs, this one is NOT for you... it' will dissorient you not having any menus.

there is no "top, left, front" view it's all in the 3D perspective view, which makes camera angels nice, but doesn't give you the accuracy any other program will give you...

i haven't found the texture editor yet, but i'm sure it's going to be the same sort of mouse-interface fiasco making things is.

Wings is more about creating prefab objects, and through a series of clicking fits, modifying a 3D prefab object into what you want it to be...

    ------------
    The Low Down
    ------------
    - scary, mouse interface based
    - good for somone who wants to have complete control of the camera
    - not worth the time you spend learning to use it.... it's too inacurate for any real use.

---it's free, if that's what your looking for, go for it.... other wise, spend the $$ for milkshape

It's MDL format does not appear to be the same as Half-Life's MDL format. They just happen to use the same extension.

    Hello.

Since we are discussing freebie modelling programs, you might want a look at these..not exactly industry standard, but free , legal, and they will run well on low end PC's, unlike say the PLE of Maya which would cause my PC to explode or something..( trust me on this one..this PC is a glorified typewriter..).

    3DCanvas

Basic version is free, limited features but really nice and friendly.
    <a href='http://www.amabilis.com/' target='_blank'>http://www.amabilis.com/</a>

    OpenFX

Not had a good look at it yet, but looks very nice so far..built in animation, raytracing etc..again, modeller part of the thing supports 3dsmax format..it's kinda beta, so use at your own risk..<!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
    <a href='http://openfx.org/about/index.php' target='_blank'>http://openfx.org/about/index.php</a>

And to convert all these weird file formats..
    <a href='http://home.europa.com/~keithr/Crossroads/' target='_blank'>http://home.europa.com/~keithr/Crossroads/</a>

Now obviously, these won't work with HL without further conversion ( hell, might be impossible for all I know..I only started learning modelling this weekend..<!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> ) , but still, might be of interest to someone out there..

Oh yeah, more free stuff ..

    <a href='http://www.computerarts.co.uk/downloads/' target='_blank'>http://www.computerarts.co.uk/downloads/</a>

( couple of the links are bust, the 3dcanvas one for instance..you'd think a computing magazine could keep a webby up to date..:/ if it's broke, google it..)

... sigh you are all lost sheep.. lost in a see of bad modeling programs..

    Get 3D Studio Max.

    Don't have the cash?

    Get Gmax.

    /me hugs his fully paid copy of 3D Studio <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

no, stay away from gmax.... it's worse than milkshape....

you've got max, so you probably haven't tried gmax... it's got less real functions than milkshape.... the only thin it's got better than MS, is skinning.... animating doesn't really work, plugins don't work, tutorials don't exist, and there isn't a helpful forums of people to help you along....

as you can tell, i hated gmax...

but then again, i risk high poly count for texture alignment in Ms3D....

    Black Panther,

I think everyone in here is fully aware of 3Dmax, Maya, Softimage etc, well, I certainly am, they are however, rather pricey....

While I assume most people know where to obtain "extended trial" versions of said software we were merely pointing out legal alternatives for people reluctant to go down the warez route.

Since I shall be starting a 3D digital media course this year, using maya and a room full of silicon graphics workstations I will no doubt get into the higher end programs, until then there's only so much you can run on a 766 Celeron y'know?..

Gmax is not very good as you will have to export it to another format and then export it to hl just to get it into hl. I used it once or twice adn i think its better then milkshape, but its kinda confusing.

Right, I've spent a while having a prod at some of these programs, and I have to say, you <i> must </i> try Blender3D ( good link..wp coldfuse etc..)

All them are worth a look at imo, so many ways of tackling the same problems, see what suits you...

    <a href='http://www.blender3d.org/Download/' target='_blank'>http://www.blender3d.org/Download/</a>

It has possibly the weirdest interface I have ever seen, but it is sooooo much fun and makes total sense after a while....follow the castle tutorial, see what you think..just keep "one hand on the mouse, one on the keyboard.." you may be suprised by how quickly it becomes natural.

    <a href='http://www.blender3d.org/Education/' target='_blank'>http://www.blender3d.org/Education/</a>

Note: Might not necessarily be any use for HL modelling, just anyone lurking in a model forum really should have a look at whats out there..especially since you can try almost all of it for free..at the very least non-modellers will get an idea of the principles involved and might even feel like giving it a go..
