<div class="IPBDescription">but how about something better?</div> Last night I played nancy or whatever map has cargo next to mess hall. In the big cargo room there are several what it looks like cages. My marine comrades and I (2 other guys with me) were running through it when we spotted a gorge. The gorge ran into the cage and I was immediately blasted by voice comm of "GORGE IN A CAGE" "KNIFE THE FATTY" etc. Then my teammates ran into the cage to knife the gorge. One was health sprayed to death but the other butchered that fat little gorge like no tomorrow. I don't know why but this got me thinking. Marines should get a new melee weapon. I was kinda thinking along the lines of the nano sword in deus ex. Just something more sharp and pointy than that little butter knife. I also looked at my bro's war hamster 40K marines and they got all kinds of nifty melee weps. I was just wondering if the rines could possibly have a better melee wep

I'm sure someone's already reskinned the knife to something more interesting, although you'd be SOL if you play on forced file consistency servers.
....what?
I think you guys are looking at this in the wrong way. It's not a weapon, it's utility, that can be substituted for a weapon.
Although, I do think it would be fun if they put in a strong melee weapon for the marines. However, it shouldn't be something you start with.

Q: Why don't we give Marines swords on the modern battlefield?
A: Because the jarheads would think we wanted them to use the damn things.
Generally when I hear that I assume it's too late <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
And yes, I'm aware that plasma weapons aren't technically energy weapons. The FAQ states:
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->- <b>Energy weaponry</b> (including, but not limited to lasers, plasma, masers, tachyon rays, and generally everything as colorful as a LSD trip) - No. Never.
<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
When Flayra finds a way to do the flamethrower in a way that he likes, you'll have your support weapon, however.
Hang on while I go to my Doom II happy place....
rawwwwwwwrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr oogh argh splat
okay, I'm back.
It is nano-crafted like the sword in DX ;D
Also its a tanto style blade which is by far the snazziest looking blade you can fit in a pommel.
But as everyones already said...
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->However, against the Kharaa, this is a very last resort. Better to retreat than engage the Kharaa in melee.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I diasgree in the way of WarHammer 40k... its the year 40 freaking thousand and youve got a bullet gun... no. 40k does to warhammer what D&D 3rd edition did for the D&D world.
I agre that you should have a little better than a butter knife to ward off aliens that can stop bullets and shoot rockets made of acid. But no sword... what the hell? Some of you may recall vibro-weapons that were present in some games a while back. The concept is that you have a normal reinforced blade that vibrated at such a frequency that it loosened the particles of whatever it touched, it could cut through the strongest metal like a knife through soft butter.
Now that's technology I would spend 30 res on (say, an upgrade that lets you turn knife into vibroblade.)
the knife is <b>ALREADY</b> f**** u|33|2 "elite"!!
I take the knife out a lot! for the damned gorges, or those musquito lerks, or when a skulk is strafing around me, or when they are attacking a building, or when i fall on them (different situation <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> ), or for those fades, get him from the back and wait till after he attacks a base and when he runs back I knife him to death <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->.
Usually when the onos comes nothing mathers... zo why not the knife <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
Knife = last resort.
Knife = utility.
Knife = quick access, concealed, almost weightless.
The marines have GUNS, they dont need melee weapons.
Sifo
I'd say this thread should have stopped with the big picture of a welder, which, by the way, was the greatest post ever.
Oh well I guess one can always play as an alien if one want to melee.
