Knife Is Okay....

but how about something better?
Last night I played nancy or whatever map has cargo next to mess hall. In the big cargo room there are several what it looks like cages. My marine comrades and I (2 other guys with me) were running through it when we spotted a gorge. The gorge ran into the cage and I was immediately blasted by voice comm of "GORGE IN A CAGE" "KNIFE THE FATTY" etc. Then my teammates ran into the cage to knife the gorge. One was health sprayed to death but the other butchered that fat little gorge like no tomorrow. I don't know why but this got me thinking. Marines should get a new melee weapon. I was kinda thinking along the lines of the nano sword in deus ex. Just something more sharp and pointy than that little butter knife. I also looked at my bro's war hamster 40K marines and they got all kinds of nifty melee weps. I was just wondering if the rines could possibly have a better melee wep

Too bad they sorta nerfed the welder in the later patches. The knife is a last ditch weapon and is in now way ment to be an effective weapon against the aliens.

Its simply there so you have some thing when you run out of ammo ...

Its not made to be uber |33t and get |33t n1fz0r k1||zzzz!!!1one ...

I have to say, as an ex Warhammer 40K fanatic(mainly setting, never cared much for the game itself, but miniatures with chainsaw swords as long as they are tall, that's what I like baby, VROOOM!), I love huge unlikely melee weapons, but that doesn't mean I think they belong in NS. Also I believe the faq states that there will probably not be any more weapons, because it's already approaching the weapon limit of the engine. If they're going to make any new weapon at all my vote would be for a hard sci-fi style plasma weapon. Big, loud, expensive and dangerous as hell to the guy using it, probably damage any non HA marine who fired it, etc, eat all breakfast lunch and dinner worth of ammo in like 8 seconds, but oh what an 8 seconds as everything in front of you dissapears, including any of your team who happens to be in front of you if friendly fire was turned on. I think that would be nifty Of course, for balance reasons I know that nothing like this will ever be implemented, but the idea of a hardcore plasma support weapon really appeals to me.

FAQ says no energy weapons ever. Sorry.

I'm sure someone's already reskinned the knife to something more interesting, although you'd be SOL if you play on forced file consistency servers.

I'm not saying add a new weapon. I'm just saying, you know, get rid of the lame combat knife, and make it a broadsword instead.

    ....what?

If you were a well equipped marine, on whatever kind of mission, would you not have a knife?
I think you guys are looking at this in the wrong way. It's not a weapon, it's utility, that can be substituted for a weapon.

Although, I do think it would be fun if they put in a strong melee weapon for the marines. However, it shouldn't be something you start with.

Not to be totally anal, but technically a plasma weapon isn't an energy weapon, it's a particle weapon, in much the same way that a rifle is a particle weapon, it just happens to use a more unstable projectile. A laser or an eletromagnetic weapon of some sort would qualify as a energy weapon. And as I said, I don't expect it to go in, but I think it would kick a whole lot of tail, but then I'd like to see a flame thrower as well. I guess I just don't see any real suppressive weapons available to marines short of mass GL spamming and I think their's a space for one, I'm not being vocal about begging for it because I understand that it may not fit with the devolopers vision and even if it did there are other things that would come first. I see lots of things that the faq says will never happen that I think would be good ideas, for instance I thing the aliens are missing a medium melee assault class, slower than a skulk and less maneuvarable but heavier hitting, but I understand the reason that I won't see this and I accept it the way it is but that doesn't mean I'm not going to keep thinking it. Right now I just have this great little vision in my head of a newly spawned marine picking up a plasma support cannon off the body of a dead HA, he unloads on the aliens as they are making their final base rush. He is instantly set of fire himself and vaporizes an Onos and a couple of fades before he burns himself up and keels over just before the aliens break through and eat the last IP, Comm probably could have dropped some med packs if he hadn't spent so many res on that worthless plasma gun, but did you see the look on the face of that Onos... See, sometimes I have almost as much fun with NS inside my head as actually playing the game.

As it was previously said, the knife is more of an utility tool than an actual weapon. It's great for taking out RTs and pretty much any structure than isn't a hive or an OC. You can use it as a weapon, but it's really, really a last ditch thing.

How about a baseball bat or lead pipe? Nothing says hello quite like a Louisville Slugger.

A red laser that burns at the tip, kinda like a, WELDER?

*All present gasp, Douglas exits the stage at lower right in obvious disgust as Borgia collapses into a faint*
    *Bring down curtains*

Q: Why don't we give Marines swords on the modern battlefield?

A: Because the jarheads would think we wanted them to use the damn things.

Well, when the WH 40k modle pack is done (probably no time soon), we hope to have the knife replaced with a chain sword.

And yes, I'm aware that plasma weapons aren't technically energy weapons. The FAQ states:

QUOTE

- Energy weaponry (including, but not limited to lasers, plasma, masers, tachyon rays, and generally everything as colorful as a LSD trip) - No. Never.

When Flayra finds a way to do the flamethrower in a way that he likes, you'll have your support weapon, however.

Okay, so if the knife's supposed to be a utility weapon, why not have it be a little more utilitarian? Like, say, a fire axe? Or a crowbar? Or a chainsaw?

Hang on while I go to my Doom II happy place....

    rawwwwwwwrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr oogh argh splat

    okay, I'm back.

It is nano-crafted like the sword in DX ;D
Also its a tanto style blade which is by far the snazziest looking blade you can fit in a pommel.

    But as everyones already said...

Even though NS aims to be independent from other games and movies, perhaps looking at other melee weapons optimized for defeating aliens is not a bad idea. For example:

"Kang: That board with a nail in it may have defeated us but the humans wont stop there. They'll make bigger boards and bigger nails. Soon they will make a board with a nail so big it will destroy them all!"

Well the welder doesn't take up the knife slot. I'd like to see that added in maybe, but there has been sume raucous about it.

Your knife can also help you open a can of canned beans... That's the main reason soldiers still have knives. They arent leet ninjas that can throw their knife right between the eyes from across a room. They open canned beans thats it!!!!

I disagree in the way of plasma weapons... Its just not needed.

I diasgree in the way of WarHammer 40k... its the year 40 freaking thousand and youve got a bullet gun... no. 40k does to warhammer what D&D 3rd edition did for the D&D world.

I agre that you should have a little better than a butter knife to ward off aliens that can stop bullets and shoot rockets made of acid. But no sword... what the hell? Some of you may recall vibro-weapons that were present in some games a while back. The concept is that you have a normal reinforced blade that vibrated at such a frequency that it loosened the particles of whatever it touched, it could cut through the strongest metal like a knife through soft butter.

Now that's technology I would spend 30 res on (say, an upgrade that lets you turn knife into vibroblade.)

    I dont get this...

the knife is ALREADY f**** u|33|2 "elite"!!

I take the knife out a lot! for the damned gorges, or those musquito lerks, or when a skulk is strafing around me, or when they are attacking a building, or when i fall on them (different situation ), or for those fades, get him from the back and wait till after he attacks a base and when he runs back I knife him to death .

Usually when the onos comes nothing mathers... zo why not the knife

Swords, axes? Ummm, how about no?

    Knife = last resort.
    Knife = utility.
Knife = quick access, concealed, almost weightless.

The marines have GUNS, they dont need melee weapons.

ok ok, now that all of you have beaten your point into the ground. I think it is understood that there is no place for new, "ub3r-"elite"" melee weaponry in NS. So just stop repeating the same thing. Or making silly joke posts about "canned beanz".

I'd say this thread should have stopped with the big picture of a welder, which, by the way, was the greatest post ever.

It'll never happen but I would find it rather fun to use some excotic looking "klingon" like blade of some sort. A HA marine could do resonable well in close combat, a LA marine would be dead meat though. It could also boost the defense of the player by a smal amount.

Oh well I guess one can always play as an alien if one want to melee.

uhhhhh why didnt you just use the lmg? or the pistol? why try to knife it to death and die when you can shoot it and move on?
