read this for a some comm stuff...
tip # 1: Practice
I dunno how to practice, but you can ask someone to not attack you (marines) and you can practice comming. Also use LAN internet thingy-majig-
and use those recource cheats (i dunno them) and try practicing.
Tip # 2: Read the Manual
The Manual's site is:
http://www.natural-selection.org/manual/
This site teaches everything you need to know about recources, structures, Kharaa, The Frontiersmen, Commanding, elvoulution, And TONS more. It also tells you about stuff you dont know or need to know in the game (makes the site more interesting and official) like, did you know that the gorge builds by UNDIGESTING chambers/hives? (YUCK!!!!)
Tip # 3: Learn about commanding
Like tip # 1, you gotta practice and learn about comming. a few tips on comming:
- Learn about each , marine structure, like how to build it and what that structure does
- Learn about the TEch thing. i dunno whats it's called, but you MUST learn which building is needed to build mroe advanced buildings. Example: to build an armoury, you must build an infrantry portal.
- Learn what buildings are needed to equip marines
- Learn to help out marines by setting up waypoints (very important), and use the different functions of waypoints, like move to waypoint, defend target waypoint, attack target waypoint, etc...
Tip # 5: Dont give up on comming!
Dont let some peeps let you down! Everyone was a newbie once! when i was a newb, i just keep learning and trying comm till i became from newb comm to average comm! JUST keep TRYING!
tip # 6: DOnt forget to build more res towers!
MOst comms forget about building multiples of res towers. Try not to forget, as they are vital to victory!
Tip # 7: Learn about the maps
As comm, you'll pretty much need to know the map to be a sucesful commander.
Tip # 8: Get a voice comm/mic
Comming is a lot easier with the voice communications/mic, unless you're a fast typer.
tip # 9: Use your jump key to go to alerts
When the comm chair voice says stuff like " soldier need orders", or "soldier under attack", etc.... You can use your jump key to quickly find that soldier and do whatever you gotta do.
tip # 10: Capturing hives
As a comm, it's your duty to bring out victory for your team. TO do this, you'll need to secure/capture hive locations b4 aliens make more hives. build phase gates, tf, turrets, and possible sieges.
Tip # 11: Upgrading your team
Dont forget to get armslab and obs to get permanent upgrades for marines! marines will totally need this as the aliens get stronger.
Tip # 12: Get better equipment
Get advanced armoury and prototype labs and get better equipment needed to suceed.
Hope this help those newb/inexperienced comms out there..

How do you scroll the map screen faster ? (mouse/keyboard scrolls are too slow , and minimap isn't that accurate)
Can you give multiple orders (waypoint appearing once previous is done) like "shifting" units in StarCraft ?
Can you center the screen on a player/marine group ?
Sometimes the waypoint function is locked. What's wrong ?
No "protect" waypoint ? (to show a HMG jetpacker to follow ect)
Does the "clic" sound (unable to place building) always mean not enough ressources ? What if an undetected alien RT occupies the node.
How do you trigger doors on and off ? Is there a specific icon displayed ?
Where are the ammo/medpacks dropped when there are several levels ?
When buildings have a "dropping zone" for weapons and powerups , is it restrained to the coplanar surfaces (not over the building or even on a slope)
Is it possible to cancel waypoints ? Sometimes the waypoint is displayed forever , even after we reach it.
1) I think if you change your sensitivity, you might be able to. Otherwise, you do get used to navigating fast on the minimap.
2/3) There are no Hotgroups like in Starcraft- YET. 1.1 has some changes to the commander's interface.
4) Define Locked
5) If a building is built, you can right click on it to be guarded. You can also right click marines to be guarded, but if you select the marine you're guarding, he'll have the waypoint stuck on his head and can't see anything.
6) Click = no res or already occupied.
7) Doors and lifts are easiest trigger by double clicking them. Most often, you can just hit any place on the door. It is tough and some maps like ns_nancy are just about impossible to open. (very little to click on)
8) Ammo and medpacks are generally dropped wherever you click on- highest level.
9) Dropping zones for buildings are only restricted to the radius. You can drop turrets on the other side of wall that a turret factory is, for example. As long as it's in the circle, and is on a flat surface (structures don't drop on angled surfaces), you should be fine.
10) Only way to cancel a waypoint is to issue a new one. Often, when multiple people are given the same waypoint, they ALL have to go to it for it to disappear. Simply ask for a new waypoint nearby that is only assigned to you. Once you go to it, you won't have any more.
Also, dont center the door on your screen so u see it from top down, its easier to click on an angle since there is more to click on.
fyi, if you hear a gorge around the map, use this to give the fatteh a little scare
Also something else that is very good to do. Make a seperate bind file for commander mode.
This will help you more than you know. Especially with health/ammo (and i don't mean health/ammo spamming, still its annoying to grab each health pack when evryone needs one)
This is very easy to do. First open the config.cfg file in your ns directory (c:\sierra\half-life\ns) in notepad or favorate text editor.
Save the current config for normal fighting: File-> Save as -> normal.cfg
Make a new file for commander mode: File-> Save as -> commander.cfg
Now you can go and make binds for things commander related, feel free to change things even WASD becasue you don't need them to move in comm mode. A list of all bindable command is listed Here.
There is a bit of a twist thou, you MUST bind a button to each menu(basic build, adv build, equipment) because for you to use an item thou bind, you must be in the right menu.
Example: you have medpack binded to 'm'
you must be in the 'equip' for it to actually work, so bind a button to each menu, and develop the habbit of always hitting both, so to drop med you press, 'e then m'.
Also you still must place the item, the bind just selects the object so you don't have to mouse off the battle field as much.
Once your done makeing your binds, there are a few special ones you need.
Bind a key to 'exec normal.cfg'
and another to 'exec commander.cfg'
i used f11 and f12. This way you can switch quickly between the two.
The last thing you must do, is exec the config manually first, two ways to do this
1(recommended) is to put exec normal.cfg in your autoexec.cfg or shortcut so that everytime you start NS its in normal mode. (you wont be able to move if your in comm mode)
2-Open NS, bring down console, and type 'exec normal.cfg'
After that you can use f11/f12 or whatever you binded
hope that helps
I'm not certain if this is the case with all your NS, but the "next weapon" bind doesn't seem to work (mouse wheel down)... So I looked at my CS binds and saw that "invnext" seems to be the bind for next weapon... And in NS, the bind "impulse 1" doesn't seem to change the weapon... So hope this can help some people out...
In config.cfg:
-change: bind "MWHEELDOWN" "impulse 1"
-to: bind "MWHEELDOWN" "invnext"
