I need it badly
If there a version of HAMMER, OR ANY MAP EDITOR, that won't crash unexpectivly all the time, in annother post I said I post 5 hours worth of work, well I redid it 30 minutes, and then I lost it again. I am really ****. Should I start to learn Quark, a few hours spent on learning a program would be better then this.

AND NO I CAN'T SAVE EVERY 10 MINUTES!!!

AND NO I CAN'T SAVE EVERY 10 MINUTES!!!

That's because his thumbs were cut off.

On a more helpful note: turn down your undo levels. That's what most people's machines can't deal with, especially once the maps get large. I work with 1 level of undo.

Make ya think, "Do I reaaaaallly want to delete that?".

What are your system specs? There should be a solution for this, I remember reading that someone had the same problem. You can try posting on the Valve-ERC forums with your problem, and someone may be able to help.

As far as I know it could handle almost anything thrown at it. Just this stupid bloody hammer doesn't want to work on my pc.

P.S. I have XP, and well it's been running for 194 Days without stopping, I don't know what it's problem is.

I do watercool my PC, and no I don't got watter in the system

    Hammer is old
Hammer is made for older PCs and older OS.

make automatic backups with this tool.
    http://collective.valve-erc.com/index.php?go=mapbackup

There are some articles and tutorials how to slow down hammer to make it run more stable.
    Cant find them now
Maybe tools to underclock your macine could help, too.

I run a dual P3 processing machine and Hammer works fine - but I'm using W2K (which is better designed for twin processors). If you know how, you can try telling windows not to use two processors for the program, but you have to do this every time it loads AFAIK. The way this is done in W2K is to right click on the start bar, select task manager, go to processes, right click on Hammer.exe, select 'set affinity', and then uncheck one of the CPUs.

Not sure if this is done in the same way in XP, though.

Yes, you can go to your video acceleration and turn it down. In Windows 2000 the control is located in your Display Properties (right-click desktop, choose 'Properties')> Settings (file tab)> Advanced (button)> Troubleshooting (file tab). There you will find the "Hardware Acceleration" slide bar. Turning this down a notch or two should not make any noticable change to the way your system performs (especially with THOSE specs), but it will slow down enough to let Hammer keep up.

This is still no garentee, and the old advice is still the best:

    Save Early and Often

Hammer is NOT a perfect program and will still crash on you, so expect it. Realisticly, you should be saving after every couple of changes, especially if you have previously morphed anything with the Vert Manip tool and have not closed and re-opened Hammer.

XP Doesn't support duel processors, one of them isn't even used, I should switch to W2k.

Hammer has been the most stable program on my computer, with 15 levels of undo... and I run Win ME!!! :o
128megs of ram. 1.4p4. Nothing special.
Every other program on my computer will crap out (Don't get me started on DEV C++ or Jbuilder...) after awhile, but Hammer runs smooth and efficient for me.

One thing though... that some people don't remember is the draw distance in the preview window. In camera mode (I think) hit 1 or 2 and watch the draw distance. Mine runs fine with full draw, but I like to keep it halfway anyway. Then again... that should be cake for your rig.
