im playing three months to this game but i have no idea how the commander works

    P.S. It takes me about 5 hours to write a good tutourial on how to map, and guess what when mappers map, they usually help the community. What about the commander don't you get?

    You've been playing for 3 months and you don't know? I've only been playing for 3 and a half about...so not much longer than you. I had to learn to hard way, much like everyone else. Just jump into the comm chair AFTER you have read the manual, and screw around with it for a little while. I've played starcraft, so the interface wasn't THAT bad. I soon learned the basics...and then it was only refining my strats and response times etc after that.

    Sifo's Guide to Commanding (or) 3 Easy Steps To Pwning The Kharaa

    1. Read the NS forums. In paticular, the Marine Strategy area. Read as much of it as you can. <b>Prepare for online play.</b>
    2. Create a game and jump in the command seat. Spend a few hours here, learn the interface, the maps, how resource comes in, where to place buildings, etc, etc. <b>Prepare for online play.</b>
    3. Jump on a server (preferably a newbie friendly one) and practice your untested skills. Try and hook up with a clan/get some friends so you can practice and perfect your skills.

    People dont gorge because they are afraid to fight....they gorge because its fun. Hell, when we have 2 hives, I'll sometimes gorge just to fight.

    To me the only thing difficult with Comming is paying attention to everything at once and being quick enough on the draw (Medpacks, etc) to keep everyone going.

    My suggestions:

    - Don't go Comm unless you have a good understand of what to build where when from a Marine's point of view. It's amazing how many times someone will jump in the comm chair and not understand what we're talking about when we say "Put a tf here and then some turrets and mines". Nothing is more frustrating than having to explain all this while the aliens are attacking.

    - Glance at your minimap frequently. It may be buggy and not update properly, but you can still see where your marines are and thus have some idea what's going on.

    - If you have the resources, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS answer calls for health and ammo. The autohelp says to hit your Jump button and it'll move you to the alert, but I found that only the default button of Enter works for me. Personally I enjoy servers with the Phase Medpack plugin (or whatever it's called) where you can just drop a zillion med and ammo packs onto the phase gate and they'll get sent out when people ask for them.

    - Try and have a plan in your head as to where the marines are going to go after they hit Here, Here, and Here. Nothing is worse than getting a waypoint sending half the team off across the map, and then being forgotten about when you get there.

    - Hotkeys can be useful. I actually haven't taken the time to set up Commander hotkeys yet, but then again I don't comm frequently. But please, don't be one of those lamers who starts spamming $50 worth of Medpacks when a soldier is fighting a skulk.

    Finally, an observation I've made recently: DON'T USE SO BLOODY MANY MINES. For some reason lately 2/3 of the comms I see will skip the whole idea of "turrets" and go straight to mining up the base so much that a single Acid Rocket kills whoever might be in the base when all the mines go off.

    Excellent, excellent point above. Binding keys: I bind medpack, ammo, mines, welder, and all the droppable weapons to keys. Very useful stuff.

    Healthpack spammage is only useful when you have an entire squad attempting to hold a hive you have just cleared but have not had time/res to get the TFs up. Otherwise its a waste of money

    When you take a hive, it generally helps to have a phase up before you have TF. No matter how many turrets you have (the more teh merrier), they cant replace a marine with the HMG and JP covering the entrance.

    When taking hives, think carefully about where you come from because the easiest way of attack is often the most obvious one. If you cant get through, Get yerself a nice cute base up (PG and THEN TF) 7 then siege that wall of turrets and fry anything that is behid it. If poss, get up 2-3 sieges because they will fire either together or when they acquire the target with a delay there will be a continuous stream of Siege turret fire... VERY hard to get through for skulks <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    A)RTFM. This goes without saying, but hey, I said it, so there.
    B)Watch other comms. This shows you how a comm thinks and what strats they like to use.
    C)Play Starcraft. I know it isn't a clone game, but the interface is nearly identical (not a bad thing).
    D)Play C&C: Generals against 7 brutal enemies. You WILL lose, but you'll have fun doing so. This gives you a sense for the insanity you will have to deal with in a large game of NS.

    After you have done the training, go and toy with the NS command interface by yourself in a LAN game. You might want to set sv_cheats 1, but don't let it get to your head. People that think they can own comm with only no-player experience get owned VERY fast.

    Lastly, hop in a game. Chances are that you will lose, but who cares? It's a learning experience.

    As a footnote, I think it would be good to mention that the team only needs one commander at a time, and that not everyone therefore needs to be good at comming. For example, I think that I could make an okay commander if I worked at it more, but I'm just not that kind of guy. I'd rather lead on the ground with a squad at my back. I make a great squad leader and marine, so I choose to focus on that more.

    cant be botherd to read all the above posts but basicaly I would say :-

    - play lots of games and read the manual
    - wait until you've seen an experienced command use EVERY building and upgrade.
    - go on a lan game, turn cheats on and get used to the menu and learn how to upgrade things. (in console sv_cheats 1)
    - eventually you'll be in a situation where people will be saying 'for christ sake someone go comm' say 'It is my first time ok?'. If there are no objections this is your chance.
    - try to get a team with at least one experienced marine who can guide your commanding (Tf here, res here, now this etc)
    - use jump to get to alert locations and keep your marines informed of everything that's going on.
    - Stay in the chair until the game is over or your kicked/asked to get out. DO NOT quit when it gets hard.
    - when you loose, take a break from commanding until you figured out what YOU did wrong. Don't blame the marines.

    I think thats about it, the rest you get from experience.
