Recommendations?
Seeing as a lot of you seem to be interested in anime, I was wondering if I could get some help. I don't really know anything about it, but I'm interested in getting some movies that people who are in the know recommend, so... anyone have a good movie or series they'd like to recommend that I see to get started?

some of the more mature gun-loving anime:

Cowboy BeBop
Trigun
Vampire Hunter D (new, AND old)

Start with Akira, work up from there.

Akira (New version I like better)
Princess Mononoke
Now and then, Here and There (I liked this one a lot)

And I second the motion on Trigun, Cowboy Beebop, and .Hack//Sign.

But that Neon Genesis Evangelion series, it may get a little too bizzare for your liking towards the end. If you want to see that series with most of the taste and none of the filler, get Death and Rebirth and End of Evangelion. However, if you decide to watch every episode of Eva, you can skip Death and Rebirth, which is just a recap of the series. End of Eva is a remake of the final 2 episodes of the Eva series.

Watch Akira and Ninja Scroll and work your way up.

Don't EVER watch Ghost in The Shell, if you want a boring story no one cares for and three scene of Action watch it.

to the person who liked hentai, it sucks. No variety at all.

I'll divide this up into categories:

CODE

The best anime of all time:
Excel Saga - hands down, the best evar...but you have to watch other anime to understand it
Puni Puni Poemi - a 'spin-off' of Excel Saga

Hayao Miyazaki - he gets his own category for being awesome:
Castle in the Sky Laputa
Mononoke Hime
Spirited Away
My Neighbor Totoro
Kiki's Delivery Service
Melodies from the Heart

Mecha/mech-suits
Full Metal Panic - Fairly new anime, and Shimokawa Mikuni ROCKS
Evangelion - had the worst ending ever...despite being a great series
Guyver - was never finished
Zoids - ...err...no.
Gundam - i despise Gundam even though lots of people love it
Macross - Better than Gundam imo
Martian Successor Nadesico - standard mecha/spaceship anime
Vandread - funny mecha(well, spaceship) anime :D
Vision of Escaflowne - darn good.
Megam Kohousei (Candidate for Goddess) - Never finished either

Standard combat (Hand-to-hand, supernatural...etc)
Iria: Zeiram - Futuristic combat vs some sort of invincible alien dude
Flame of Recca - Lots of fighting
Gatekeepers - weird 'gate' powers
Saber Marionette J - female robots on a world without real women...hmm
Trigun - err...comedy + shooting. A win-win situation
Record of Lodoss War (OAV) - classic 'D&D' scenario
Rurouni Kenshin / Samurai X - sword fighting
Yuu Yuu Hakusho - supernatural abilities, fighting vs. demons, whatnot
Inu Yasha - girl travels through time to magic + demon infested time...etc
Ranma - I hate it, even though some people think it's funny
X - blarg, it's ok I guess. The TV show isn't bad.
Noir - a spy anime
Hellsing - One word: Vampires!

Slayers - it deserves its own category :)
Slayers/Slayers Next/Slayers Try (TV Series)
Slayers Premium, Slayers Gorgeous, Slayers Great, Slayers Return, Slayers Perfect (Movies)
Slayers Excellent, Slayers Special (OAVs)

Romance/Shoujo
Aa, Megami-sama - one of the best anime ever;)
Mahoromatic - mmm...Maids are always lovely
Kareshi Kanojou no Jijou (His and Her Circumstances)
Love Hina - a very good anime
Fushigi Yuugi - personally my favorite although it might not suit you

Comedy:
Photon
Those Who Hunt Elves
Golden Boy

Other:
Three Kingdoms
Hikaru no Go
Kacho Oji
Strange Dawn
Slam Dunk...if that's your kind of thing
H2
FLCL
Hunter X Hunter
Cyber Formula GPX

by the way, .Hack was whack...but the music was great! Definitely get the soundtrack at least.

Ghost in the shell and Akira suck.
They're even worse than dragonball /Z/GT/whatever, because dragonball at least has a semblance of plot, even if it takes years (i'm not kidding, there's like over 400 episodes in the whole dragonball lineup, as well as 13 movies) to get to the story.

Ghost in the shell and Akira have no comprehensible story line.
They are pure crap.

Also, if you have the guts to watch it, Ninja Scroll - it's fairly graphic but I think you'd agree that it is freaking cool.

Chobits is a good one...
I didn't like FFU, it was pretty boring...
Angelic Layer was decent
never saw Hand Maid May but heard it was pretty good..
Rayearth was annoying because of the freaking rabbit, but it was pretty good overall...
Tokyo Underground started off badly but it turned out decent, especially the manga.
Star Ocean EX is your run of the mill anime...it's not great.
Weiss Kreuz is pretty cool.
Saint Seiya isn't *that* old
Naruto isn't as good as the manga - get the manga instead, if you can.

Oh, you reminded me of some other series
Grave of the Fireflies
Oja Majo Doremi
Gensou Maden Saiyuki - it's a rework of the traditional chinese tale Xi You Ji (it's about a monk who's traveling to India to study the sacred texts of Buddha)
Cat Girl Nuku Nuku
Bubble Gum Crisis /2040
8 Man After (pretty old)
Legend of Arislan
Project A-ko - even if the anime is pretty much a joke, the American-composed soundtrack rocks.
Tenchi! Muyo
Bakuretsu Hunters
DiGi Charat
Fatal Fury
Knights of R(L)amune
Getbackers
Onegai Teacher
Sol Bianca
Sakura Taisen
To Heart
Doremon
Fist of the North Star - fun to watch, but not great

Anime that aren't worth watching:
Armitage 3
Any dragonball series
Akira
Ghost in the Shell
Ninja Resurrection
Street Fighter Alpha
Any dubbed anime (yes, there are decent ones...but just to be on the safe side)

heh, so much anime...so little time to watch

My preferred Anime's:

Princess Mononoke (the greatest Anime movie!)
Escaflowne (The Movie, a little weird but cool)
Battle Angel (I've seen episode 1 & 2, damn cool)
Berserk (Big sword + strong guy = Dark haired Cloud Strife)
.hack//sign (strange but cooool)
Akira (I've seen it 4 times. I understand it now)
Inu Yasha (pretty good, can't go wrong with half-demons)
Hellsing (Vampires + guns = mucho funo)
Gundam Wing (I like the one with Wing Zero, Sandrock, all those)
Starship Troopers (ok, not true anime but still really good)
Yuyu-Hakusho (pretty cool, can't argue)
Ruruoni Kenshin [sp?] (Samurai's = win)

I'm definitely like the dark animes.

-Kenshin OAV (TV sucks, I'm sorry.... Hope I didn't make too many enemies... *cringes in fear*)

-Cowboy Bebop & Cowboy Bebop Knockin' on Heaven's Door

-Noir (for the MUSIC!! ending sucked imo)

-Witch Hunter Robin

-Serial Experiment Lain (some people will LOVE it, some will LOATH it... I loved it.)

-Saishyuu Heiki Kanojo or "Saikano" (very sad)

Stuff I like:

Movies: (most you can pick up at blockbuster)
- Akira
- Ghost in the Shell
- Princess Mononoke
- Cowboy Bebop Movie
- Transformers: The Movie uncensored version ^_^

Series:
- Hellsing (my current fav)
- Trigun (some love it, some hate it)
- Cowboy Bebop
- Berserk

I doubt that further lists are necessary, so I'll give some remarks:

- Akira: The anime is a shortened up version of the six telephonebook-sized mangas, which rock so hard I can't put them in the same shelve with breakable objects. I recomend to read them and stay far away from the movie.

- LAIN: Definetely one of the best pieces of Cyberpunk I've ever seen. It takes time to get into, but is worth it.

- Cowboy Bebop: The best anime series ever. Period.
• VenmochVenmoch Join Date: 2002-08-07 Member: 1093Members
I jumped in at the deep end with Anime!

First series: Neon Genesis Evangelion (And my what a crap ending!)

First Movie: Akira (Whoa that was wierd, but the general kicked ****!)

Cowboy Bebop is a lot less intensive on the head (Most likely as a lot of the episodes are stand alone rather than one big story). Evangelion is fine but perhaps not the ideal starting anime. The technical term given to this series is "Mind-F***" (Watch the series and find out why, that of the second part of the film. That was some scary crap. Espesially the Gendo hand and Rei scene.)

Ghost in the shell is good but it has more story telling then action. (Unlike Blood which had more action than story telling...) And Akira is fine but it takes at least 4 viewings to get what goes on...

Basically don't go for Eva and Akira as your first thing to watch. They can both be a little harsh to start with. Try something a little less weird. Like Cowboy Bebop. In fact thats the best one to start with

Then theres manga, (And I only own Ghost In The Shell and Cowboy Bebop, but they aren't that bad! I just needed the Cowboy Bebop OST in the background just to get the feeling right!)

Anyway, the guy was looking for a starter list not a list of all the anime you've ever seen/read/heard about/saw out of the corner of your eye while looking through some .jp site (which is why my list wasn't like 3x longer - i easily thought of 40-50 more).

Vampire Hunter D 2001: Bloodlust - has very kickass video quality...American-made, but still top-notch. It's also great because it was in native English, no crappy translating or dubbing. Story is lackluster/not very developed, but it's so freaking cool that it didn't bother me that much. And the original Vampire Hunter also rocked.
