I'd have to say I agree completly with the Overmind, if it was going to be done, it should be done right. And my standard of what is right is probably lower then Flay's!
I've started to make a training maps for the marines. You spawn as a fresh marine fronteirsman recruit in a big ship and you've got a hard seargent on your **** (Like the one in Op4 which ill use as a base) training you all the way from movement to weapons to commander mode.
I think (*think*) that the dev team is planning on some type of "Traiing Course" in the future. Undoubtedly, this would have some aspects of a single player mission, possibly even a basic AI for enemies. If that ever comes to fruition, then it may be possible to create other "training mission" scenarios as well.
As for me, i'd never use them and I'd never really care one way or another.
As far as I recall Flayra said (Pre release BTW) While he didn't want to code and make a single player part of NS he was quite happy for some loving community member to do it.
That is of course if my memory serves me correctly!

I'm going to do the training map. It's gonna take me a while, but for Flayra, ill gladly do it. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
i think he's talking about the "hazard course" found in your main menu, it's basically like training. i think it might be quite interesting, and i might even visit it every once in awhile.
Yeap that's it. I don't see how training could be one for the aliens though. But for marines, i've got a nice "boot camp" planned out <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
