<div class="IPBDescription">Monse probably can help too ;)</div>I've been thinking. I know its dangerous. But I continue:
I've heard about a couple distro's of linux people have thrown together to boot off a CD-ROM for disaster recovery means. I was wondering if any of you guys knew anything like that to recommend.
Basically, I'm looking to replace my good old win98 boot disks, for which FDISK doesn't properly recognize the size of my Hard drive (160gb). I'd also like some way to manage files on the hard drive w/o worrying about the old dos 8.3 system messing up my file names. And while I'm at it, why not get some other nice things eh?
Things I'm looking for in this:
Essential:
- 100% off CD, no hdd caching or anything.
- Properly recognize my 160gb hdd, and above (for when I get a bigger one)
- Mounting of all drives, including FAT32 and NTFS partitions
- Partition & Format tools, including FAT32 and NTFS partitions
- Relative ease of use. I gotta be able to figure the thing out, otherwise its no good to me. :P
- [added] Ease of use. I'm a linux n00b
- Again, not messing w/ the hard drives in any way shape or form, especially not the boot sector.
Bonus (stuff that would be cool):
- Networkable (including Internet)
- Diagnostic utilities of some form
- Maintancence utilities (defrag/scandisk equivilents)
- CD Burning (in case I need to make emergency backups of something)
- [added] Works w/ various hardware. This is to be used in more than one system as a generic boot disk.
I also saw something or nother about somebody making Windows do this too, but I couldn't really find anything. Perhaps Monse knows...
I found one thing that looked okay, but it was in German only. heh. Can't exactly use that one...
Big big big thanks to anybody who can help me out in this area.
