Gets Choppy

When I'm In fights
I've got a 56/k (so this might be the problem)
1.47GH
Athlon 1700
512 MB RAM
60Gig hard drive
GeForce 2 or 3 (can't remember) vid card
Windows XP

Whenever I'm playing in a server I'll have a ping of about 300, choke 100 (which doesn't effect play very much), loss of 0, fps 70-100, but lately when I get into firefights it gets REALLY choppy. People are teleporting outa nowhere. My choke/ping stays almost exactly the same (this makes it hard to figure out the problem). In net_graph 2 the dots at the top go WAY up and the little lines at the bottom go into serious red (both look like they're just about maxed out). Anyone got any ideas?

assuming the info you provided is correct i would say its server side
unless you are simply overloading ur bandwidth
although it had to say,
i suggewst net_graph3 instead numbers = good!

I've been using both Net_Graph 2 and 3. Also, this is a problem I have had on a number of servers.

Yes, you are getting massive packet loss. Are you using a winmodem? If so, what make and model and what drivers?
• DaK_mAnIakDaK_mAnIak Join Date: 2003-01-04 Member: 11811Members
From what I can tell its a Generic SoftK56. Driver is 5.0.0.2.

I have no idea if this is the correct info. (or what these are for that matter).

Yes, it is a winmodem ( a software-based mode, rather than a hardware-based one that handles comm much better). You have a couple options - update your drivers and see if that clears it up a bit. Also, talking to your phone company about possible line noise, as well as trying out some different connection points when you dial your ISP to seeif you can find one that is closer or better for you.
• DaK_mAnIakDaK_mAnIak Join Date: 2003-01-04 Member: 11811Members
Thanks. What exactly would I saw about line noise? Complain? Sue them? I'm all up for making a cool $10 million.

Mostly just ask them to doa trace and see if there are any issues or a lot of noise on the line that would lead to a lot of packet loss... start with drivers though .

Are you kidding?

100 choke doesn't affect your gameplay?

set cl_updaterate to about 20 and lower it until your choke is sub-10 preferably 0

Yea, I seem to run fine with a choke of 80-100. It's only during fire fights that it gets EXTREMELY choppy. Actually I never used to have this problem, it just recently started and its gettting proggressivly worse so normal gameplay is for some reason becomeing affected by the choke. Its getting to be a real problem.

EDIT: I just tried this and it only works for a minute or two. After that it just goes right back up.

Is there an application which can monitor my connection speed?

(Sorry for making two posts in a row, I just figured this was better than starting a whole new thread).

Of course it runs fine when nothing is going on. Packets are extremely small when nothing is going on and you don't really have anything moving on your screen to show how choppy it really is.

You probably have bad rate, cl_rate, cl_cmdrate and cl_updaterate values. Check out this page for information on how to set them properly.

I don't think its due to a bad line, otherwise the problem would show up as packet loss and not choke.

Just post your config.cfg Dak, we can tell you some possible settings to go with, or see if the current settings are bad.

I change around my rate and updaterate in game when my ping starts getting bad (it works for a little while), so the given values are not always like the ones shown.

I hope this is what you were asking for.

EDIT: Given the page that Kazyras gave me, it would be nice to know at exactly what speed im connecting at. Does anyone know of where specifically you can find your connection speed?

Doesn't look like your settings are what would cause that much choke (although you should definitely follow the steps in that posted article and reduce your cl_cmdrate and cl_updaterate settings ingame until your choke gets low or removed altogether).

Also (as we've seen a rash of this lately), download and run ad-aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/) on your PC. We've had a rash of users getting bad gameplay issues that cleared up when some mystery applet/trojan was removed.

Then post back here with how it went!

I ran the scan but I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for. None of the files had a "high" risk so I would assume that not much needs to be deleted.

If your unable to get this problem fixed, Id *Highly* Suggest you get a hardware modem.
• DaK_mAnIakDaK_mAnIak Join Date: 2003-01-04 Member: 11811Members
Thats probably not out of a the question. Whats a good kind and about how much do you think it would cost? And to what extent would that increase performance?
• MonsieurEvilMonsieurEvil Join Date: 2002-01-22 Member: 4Members, Retired Developer, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
Anything and everything that ad-aware finds (and you should make sure you run the deepest, most intense scan options) should be deleted. All of it.

As for modems, spending a couple extra dollars (literally) to get a name-brand one is usually a good idea. Go for a US Robotics V.92 Hardware modem. Its MSRP is $40, so you should likely pay no more than $35 for it, and it will have excellent drivers, compatibility, and support.

i have,

AMD 900, ATI Radieon 8500 LE 64megs, 256 ram and a cable modem.
Any suggestions on how to get my fps higher
usually is a steady 20-30.

Not in this thread. First, start a new topic. When you do so, people will simply point you to all the pinned topics in this forum about how to do it.

Basically, you are using bad forum ettiquete. Please cease and desist.

Thankyou MonsieurEvil. Now, 1) Will this greatly increase performance and 2) Are the more efficient modems out there (even if they are quite spendy) that would work better?
• MonsieurEvilMonsieurEvil Join Date: 2002-01-22 Member: 4Members, Retired Developer, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
1) Compared to a winmodem? Almost certainly. Compared to DSL or cable - not much

2) I can recommend nothing better than a USR modem. They make the best, in my opinion.
