<div class="IPBDescription">How am I doing so far?</div> Hi there everyone,
These are a few early screen shots of my first NS map. It is still in need of detail, texture placement, and lighting effects. I just wanted to get a few opinions of how I am doing so far. Please keep in mind this is my first map though! <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
The map was originally going to be called NS_Deep a few months ago when I started thinking about it, but I just saw someone else is using that name already, so I guess if it isn't taken I'll call it, NS_Submerged.
Story Line:
The Ns_Submerged is an underwater research facility built to investigate the periodic seismic activities in the planets crust that cause havoc on the population above. While the research team was excavating the ocean bottom for answers, they uncovered a large cave. Shortly, while they were examining some rock samples from the site, they noticed a strange bacterium that seemed to be rapidly multiplying beyond anything they had ever come across before.....
The first few screenshots are from the marine start. It is the submarine docking port for the facility. The Ready Room is going to be a submarine. The machine above is an electromagnetic crane used to dock the subs securely, and can raise them out of the water for repairs if need be.

<img src='http://punchyourboss10.tripod.com/ns_submerged2.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>
<img src='http://punchyourboss10.tripod.com/ns_submerged3.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>
The last screenshot is the excavation site where the outbreak starts. The large vehicle is used for excavation and tunnel making, hence the large drill on the front. (Still having compile problems with that, Note the missing texture! Guess I gotta rebuild that.)
<img src='http://punchyourboss10.tripod.com/ns_submerged4.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>
R_speeds are not in the screenshots, but so far they are in the 200-350 range, and a few places up to 550, but not above. I hope as I detail more they remain ok.
This next small picture is a hive location scheme I was debating. I have noticed most maps have the hives and spawn in the four corners type layout. I was thing more of a triangle pattern with the marines in the middle. Do you guys think this is a viable layout option?
<img src='http://punchyourboss10.tripod.com/layout.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>
This might give the marines a slight distance advantage to get to a hive first, but once they commit to taking one they will be longer away from the others.
Many times, the marines relocate to a central location anyway. I also was going to make sure that all 3 hives and the marine spawn were highly attackable, as well as defendable, so it will be harder to dig in, but still will promote team comebacks. Plenty of cover for skulks and marines, multiple siege points for hives, and plenty of vents and connecting corridors for aliens.
The other 2 hives will be, Communications and Life Support.
One more thing, does anyone know where I could get an infested looking rock texture? I am bad enough at texture usage as it is, I am definitely no texture artist, so I am hesitant to try to make one myself.
Thanks, and please be kind :X
EDIT: Hmm, Tripod seems to not like my linking to the pics. If you guys can't see them here, the link is <a href='http://punchyourboss10.tripod.com' target='_blank'>punchyourboss10.tripod.com</a>

Nevertheless looking pretty good.
Name you file .txt instead of .jpg... then upload to tripod/geocities
then use the img link to the .txt file instead...
It should work as i have used it a few times before on other forums
eg...
Pic1.jpg - rename to pic1.txt
then
[IMGwww.blahblahblah.pic1.txt/IMG]

Get rid of those "spikes" too.
Try and make the rock a lot more smooth then jagged.
Thanks for all the feedback guys.
As far as the screenshots being too bright, I did photoshop them to lighten them up a bit because I have a very dark monitor, I guess I forgot that to everyone else, they would be too bright. Sorry about that.
Suicidal, thanks for the tip about renaming the files, but I still could not get it to work. When I renamed them the NS Board gave me an error saying that it wasn't a valid file name when used with the img tags.
Before I start mapping it out, I'm interested to see what everyone's opinion is on the location of the 3 hives and marine spawn I proposed in the picture though. Do you think it will be balanced?
Anyway, thanks again for the help. I will post more screenshots as the map progresses, and this time I won't over brighten them <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
nice MS <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
could use some infestation in the hive area.
keep up the good work
Actually Bast is a triangle layout, with the MS sat in the middle of the 3 hives. This layout has a tendancy to be easy to siege, as there isn't much straight line distance between the MS and each hive.
BUT, it makes locking down 2 hives for the marines at the start very easy since the aliens basically have to run twice as far as they normally do and close to the marine spawn... unless you make a lot of hallways leading to each of them but thats another feat.
Most official NS maps are either like this:
0 = Marine spawn
x = hive
-----0-----
x----x----x
or
x-----x
0-----x
Nice start on your map.
