and it pwns. Solid port, but not perfect
[BIG EDIT]

I had a big review here about how good the game was and how it is a good purchase if you don't have a PS2. Well, that was before I found a bug that essentially makes the game impassible. There is a bug that whenever you get to the Tanker holds (Commandant's Speech) on a TANKER ONLY game (meaning you don't go to the big shell and play as Blondie Who Doesn't Exist). Whenever you step onto the first metal plank that makes noise (regardless of your speed) the game instanlty freezes. Upon viewing the Task Manager, I noticed the CPU usage is 100%, which indicates that the program has hit an infinite loop.

I cannot imagine how this could have slipped past quality control, but ugh, its going back to the store. Thank heaven for Babbage's return policy on games that flat out don't work.

So in summary, as much as it pains me to say this, DO NOT buy Metal Gear Solid 2 for the PC. Unless you don't want to play it that is.

No need to buy a controller when you shouldn't be buying the game...

Your quite the positive one aren't ya Fox...

Anyways, I applaud thier inititive to put games on DVD. Now if only they would run the game off of them, a 8gb full install is pretty big. But even with the enhanced gfx, I already own MGS2 Substance on my PS2. It would be pretty redundant, and Ive already got a good controller for it

Indeed. The ps2 versions of the game are still superior to the pc version, so if you one you're crazy not to go for that one instead :P

Is this Substance you bought?
• DOOManiacDOOManiac Worst. Critic. Ever. Join Date: 2002-04-17 Member: 462Members, NS1 Playtester
yeah, on PC Substance is the only version, they don't have regular mgs2 on pc (or x-box), but ps2 has both now.

I was both impressed and turned off by MGS2. The Substance version does nothing to improve on the games weaknesses, rather add lots of samey extra content. My biggest gripe with the MGS2 game was that it had too much FMV, with a REALLY BIZARRE STORY, and too little gameplay. The designer really has a small moviemaker in his veins. I just wish he'd tone down his movie ambitions and focus more on a good game. The same strangeness was found in Silent Hill 2 by him as well, but in that game it didnt feel so out of place at least.

So I played the game from end to other, and sat back with strange mixed feelings on it. It's a nice game, but not nice enough for a pure recommendation.

Besides, that Raiden character. Is it special japanese dramaturgical convention, or do they always go "What?" or "What are you saying!" in every second sentence? It keeps reminding me of All your Base are Belong to Us. "What you say!". It just feels.... wrong. Raiden sound like such a nubbin

Oh, and if you have a choise about it, go for the PS2 version. The pc has nothing to it that the PS2 didnt do well enough - or better - already.
• LokeLoke Join Date: 2003-02-25 Member: 13988Members
Immacolata: MGS2 had no computer-generated FMV's, it haded cut-scenes with the ingame engien.

WHAT ... EVER you nit pickity nit picker FMV or "in game rendered narrative sequences" from now on know as "IGRNS" - they were TOO prevalent and too long. And BIZARRE at the end. Geez, that story get more and more confusing.

To all confused people, read this for a clarification on the strange and convoluted story of Metal Gear Solid 2.

Yummy, I never got the Thermals in MGS2, hmmm. Eh, I don't care anyway.

I actually preferred em when they were just Infrared in PS2.. just a red tint on the screen instead of a true "thermal" look. Just looked better and was easier to see for me...

Its just that the most screenshot worthy moments are taken when you're killing legions of goons all charging at you. Plus that jump-out shooting is so damned cool...

Burr, box is just like the x-box box, but w/o the black/green "xbox" bar at the top, and in a pc game shaped box.

th@ annoying kid, who is obviously Silverfox's cousin or something, should read THE LAST POST I MADE... :P

Besides, I'm going for the Orca (250+ kills on Extreme) rating :P
• BurrBurr Join Date: 2002-11-19 Member: 9358Members
but its so hilarious, one of the best parts of the game is sneaking around in the box.

Theres always the proposed Gamecube version or MGS1 for that!

Nice pictures DOOManiac. But I think that it looks better on PlayStation2. Even with the high resolution on the PC.
But why dident you take any pics on Raiden or on the oil-plantform? Much more nicer and better weapons ect.
Damn that I dont have any pictures when I'm playing, we could compare them and see who has the best and sharpest graphics.
• DOOManiacDOOManiac Worst. Critic. Ever. Join Date: 2002-04-17 Member: 462Members, NS1 Playtester
There is no Raiden. I don't know what you're talking about. Metal Gear Solid 2 ends when the tanker sinks, I think its some big cliffhanger for MGS3!!

Oh and Venmoch: Yeah, i'm definately looking forward to the new Metal Gear on GC, whether it is a remake (really I'd love to see the first one remade more than Solid, or the second since I've never played it) or something new.
• LokeLoke Join Date: 2003-02-25 Member: 13988Members
DOOManiac: Weird, because in the PS2 version you can play as Raiden (Substance). Yes, you stop playing with Solid Snake and continue with Raiden on the oil-platform.
