<div class="IPBDescription">Work in Progress</div> So, I've begun trying to make an overlord. But I've got a few questions concerning polycount.

1. How many poly's could a hive model be? More that the original one? Or about the same? How many does the current one have then?
2. How can I see how many poly's are in my model when I'm building it (I'm using Milkshape 3D)

Any progress on the model I'll post in this thread as well, so keep track of it if you want...

I'll post some screenies of the thing as soon as possible.

EDIT:

ow yeah keep posting ref pics i could really use them <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    In the "tools" menu there's something like "model statistics" about half way down.

    If you decompile the default hive, you could use the same method to find out its polycount.

    the unit shot of overlord in the starcraft manual under zerg unit description section is a pretty good picture. The only thing is that it's black and white.
    u can also check out the cinematics, game loading screens and stuff.

    can't wait to see some model pics. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> Keep up teh good work !!

    Here's my first wip report:

    I've taken a look at the original hive and it had about 1300 poly's. This one is about 500, but I still have to copy and mirror it for the other side.

    I've done the head two times and they both look a bit weird, all black so I can't see it clearly. Can anyone explain why that is? I've done the smoothshade thing... <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Ok so I put a screenshot of my work so far down here and I hope to complete it as soon as possible, but I really like to hear what you people think, because now I can still change things...

    Duo, it doesn't matter what way you're making them as long as you're consistent. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Yeah, there is mad inverted face. Go to flat shade rendering, select all the black faces and invert them.

    Edit:

    No fair, he fixed them. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    but i think the arms and claws of overlord are missing, u need to add those. u can clearly see them in almost all the reference material

    Wow thanks guys that was really usefull, weird that I never saw that in a tutorial. Must have overlooked it <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    EDIT:

    I've done the Shift+Ctrl+F thing and it worked so that's ok for now. About the missing claws and the wrong shape, I'm working on it. Check out the image above, I updated it to show the same model but now without the so-called 'false faces'. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    god job, keep up the work, and as a note, flat shaded (right click on 3D view) is the way to go

    Phew finally another wip-update...

    I glad to say the model is almost done! I just have to do some stuff on the belly of the beast and to the legs, and after that weld all things together. I hope you like it and any suggestions or critisism is welcome....

    Yeah make the tentacles longer, and maybe more spikes on its back. Other than that, great work.

    I was beggining to think you abandoned this since there were no updates for some time. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Yeah I'll be making the tentacles longer. About the spike thing I think I got the right amount of spikes already, but I'll see into it. One thing I forgot to mention is that half of the model is missing (for those who didn't see this), but I'm going to copy and mirror the half that's already done <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    No it just took me a lot of time to make it, but that's because I'm not experienced at modelling. This is accually my first big project <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I'm very very very sorry to say that I'm going to have to drop the project. I know many of you people have been looking forward to the completion of this model, and so have I. But not all is lost. I've saved what I've done for now and anyone who wants to take it over please PM me. I still keep modeling, but this time I'll begin a little bit more simple...

    Yeah post a zip, I'll give it a try too. I was looking forward to this one as a replacement hive for the sc pack.

    good call Sylver. No offense to you or anything, but I know a lot of people jump into complex modelling before getting basics down well, and remember, you don't have to release EVERYTHING you make <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Thnx for understanding roadmaster, it's just the way you said. Just one question before doing anything, I've been working in milkshape so I'd like to know in what format I should post the model. (.ms3d / .smd)
  • enf0rcerenf0rcer intrigued... Join Date: 2003-03-16 Member: 14584Members
    ms3d for me please
