Dedicated Connection

<div class="IPBDescription">wondering about bandwidth/$</div> Hey guys, just wondering a few things...

I would like to get a server running, have the hardware, but need a decent connection.

Should I:
A) Look into getting a game server host to do it for me @ high prices I understand(for NS at least)...
B) Look into getting a dedicated connection of some kind (DSL, something with unlimited DL and UL)
-->this is expensive too, but it is *mine* and I can do other things with it, such as run web servers, etc.

Any thoughts and/or suggested companies in Ontario (West/East Toronto area) to look at getting info from would be appreciated.

Admins out there that have each type, tell me things you like and don't like about each and which companies to stay away from and which to look into. I need some help to see if this is the route I want to go...

Thanks in advance,
-Matt <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='skulk.gif'><!--endemo-->

    One suggestion:
    If you are going to run the server 24/7 from home, be sure your ISP allows servers to be run on your connection. Most residential broadband contracts forbid it, but commercial contracts will allow it (at a higher price then residentail of course <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo--> ). You can try to run it on a residential setup, but you risk getting shutdown by your ISP. The risk depends on your ISP though. Mine is very lazy about that sort of thing fortunately... <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    The idea is I'm looking into a "business" connection setup. Normal residential services are just not dependable, and they screw you over with no upload capabilities. If they reversed the UL and DL bandwidth it would be awesome, but I don't know if anyone does that sort of thing... I think my service right now with COGECO cable is something like 512 Kbits UP, 2 Mbits DOWN.

    Hosting in canada is really expensive (ive tried). I got a few quotes from companies, and they said it would be about $200 per month for a 20 player server (20 player server uses approximatly 45 GB of bandwidth per month). The reaon why prices are so expensive here, is that the infrastructure is not set up well. Bandwidth is more expensive, its cheaper to get hosting in the US, even with the crappy exchange rate.

    Voogru does hosting, try him out.
