<div class="IPBDescription">help for nvida gf2 needed...</div> Hello,

Just yesterday i believed my problems were about to be solved. Having had it to the back teeth with 30-15 fps on my crappy old voodoo 2 i went out and bought a geforce 2 64mb pci mx400 with tvout.

Went home, installed it after a bit of trouble, then tried a lan game of tfc to test it out.

Now i find i have spent $115AU to get a net fps increase of -20!!

I went and downloaded the latest drivers but its still so incredibly **** that i cant play dod or cs or ns or even crappy old tfc.

I have a aptiva AMD K6-2 with 3DNOW!, 120mb sd ram, 10 gb harddrive, gf264mb sd pci (obviously), 500 mhz processor, win 98 and an incredible anger management problem.

Could some1 please help me here - something is seriously wrong if a 64mb geforce 2 can only produce 10fps in opengl and 11 in d3d.

Thanks in advance,

(BTW previous posts about achieve above 60 fps were for a friends computer - not mine)

Try disabling your vsync and have your monitor refresh at 85-100 hertz.

Yeah I already killed vsync - havent bumped up the refresh rate tho - ill give it a try.

No Tysungfi, I did try it but no improvement.

This problem seems so severe and unusual given my specs that I am kind of hoping someone out there has the "magic bullet" that has me leaping from 10 to 40-50 <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Thanks anyway...

This may sound stupid, but make sure you uninstalled your old voodoo drivers. If you want, I use a Gf4 Ti4600 and can post pictures of what my settings are if you'd like. My friend has the same card as you and has his settings just like mine and sometimes you really can't tell the difference between the two cards. Also his 64 mb Gf is overclocked to hell.

Eheheheh yeah I made sure the voodoo drivers were dead, that was one of my original problems in installing it.

If you could post that borg i would really appreciate it - but I'm really beginning to lose hope here - 10 fps with a gf2 is a very serious problem for a vid card that powerful.. sigh

I have 100 fps with my GF2. Download the last detonators at www.nvidia.com they are great since verson 38 or something like that.

You got a PCI graphics card. Thats your biggest problem. nVidia made their cards on the bandwidth of a AGP slot. The PCI solutions don't have the memory bandwidth to work with.

You'll get a hell of a lot more out of your system by chucking in some RAM. 256MB maybe. Ram is cheap... go get some.

www.scorptec.com.au cheap prices fairly competitive. Go to your local computer swapmeet if you can as the prices are dirt cheap there.

Go get the latest drivers from the manufacturers site. Detonators are more focussed on bandwidth maximisation (on a AGP). The site manufacturer would have hopefully tweaked the drivers for PCI.

You would have done a lot better getting a Radeon 7500 PCI. Cheaper and better performance than a GF2.

Honestly, this may just boil down to your AMD K6-2 processor and chipset, and how they were made about 3 generations before the K6. But what I would suggest doing before you do anything else is take your card over to a friend's house, throw it into his machine, and make sure it's not just a simple problem with your card. If it works fine, come on back and we'll explore further.

oh yea... hehehe .... NEVER buy a PCI video card....

    Well,

I trotted over to my mates house, and it works like a dream <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo--> so no luck with a dodgy card...

Thanks for the settings borg, i tried them with small improvement. And btw i know pci is crap its just that my motherboard doesnt have an agp slot. And if it did have an agp slot i wouldnt buy pci anyway as agp is WAAYYYY cheaper.

I think you got it there MonsE, I had a friend look at the computer and he went something like "My God, you've been taken son, this is a k6-2, and you paid WHAT for it?"

Still I would like to try and see if I can get it to work - so if anyone has any more suggestions I would really appreciate it.

    *EDIT*

Perhaps as an indication of just how poor my motherboard is - it cant handle pc133 ram - only pc100. When I put pc 133 in it will run it at only half speed ie 256mb pc133 will only register as 128.

    Thanks

Thats because your motherboard needs double sided ram. It expects to see ram on both sides rather than just on one side.

You need to go buy double sided SD rather than single sided (it costs a bit more but you have no choice.)

Its not because its running it at half speed. If it were running at half speed it'd be PC 66.

It is running at PC100 if anything.

WHAT! Is that all? Double sided! Argh I spent hours trying to figure out that bloody RAM and its half hearted bs... So double sided is all I need eh. Thanks RogueX5 - thats been bugging me for a while, I really appreciate that.

Still no luck with my gf2 - so I think I am going to return it today. I know people on these boards are really good with computer stuff and could probably help me get more out of it - but I just cant see anyone happening on a solution that sees me from 10-15 fps all the way to 90.

Anyway those computer store **** i bought it from are advertising a 64mb pci gf4 sdram at EXACTLY the same price that i bought this gf2 for a couple of days ago.

Thanks everyone for your help, and stay tuned for what will probably be another exciting episode of me vs the geforce 4 <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

And it probably could handle PC133, but your bus speed is only 100 mhz
If you put the bus speed to 133 with the multiplier at 4, then there should be a performance increase, as well as letting the RAM run at 133 mhz

If you post your motherboard model, it would help a bit. It could even be a bug in the BIOS. Try getting a newer BIOS revision... it can't hurt

I rather doubt it's a bug - I mean, he's using a pre-Athlon processor and board. Equivalent at best to a Pentium 2. His video card is just not going to operate very well in that low-bus, old generation architecture. Did you recently buy this? Used or new - they haven't made this gear in years, to my knowledge...

I bought this in about late 1999. I dont know the motherboard specs - but it has a lot of "onboard" stuff and resists any attempt to change anything. Its been a learning experience to say the least.... Perhaps i should just get a second voodoo2 and join em up in sli - at least I know that the voodoo2 performs on this comp.

    Any other suggestions?

I returned the RAM and gf2 today btw - thinking of getting double sided or mayb just saving up for a new comp....

Thanks again for all your help
