1.1 And Server Hosting Services

<div class="IPBDescription">A question for the Devs if possible?</div> I have brought up the topic of server providers hating on NS before. This question is in relation to 1.1. I am not sure about all game server providing companies, but I know Recongamer (who hosts my CS server) among others refuse to host NS because of the toll it takes on CPU. I read the fixes to be expected in 1.1 and CPU strain was one of them, but will this be enough to change the cold hearts of Recongamer? We pay 80 bucks a month for our 20 person CS server, and I really just want an NS one. So Flayra, or whoever handles these things, please inform these companies that 1.1 will be safe to host and I am sure we can see a massive growth in servers. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

NS simply does a lot more stuff than other games. CS and quake for example are just damage code and team code and some weapon code on top of the game engine of physics code and map code.

NS has all of the resources, the dozens of playermodels, complicated damage code, and also a lot of time based abilities like redempt, regen, adren, cloak. NS simply has a LOT of stuff going on.

my point is that even if flayra manages to cut down a lot of cpu usage itll still be double CS.

makes me think... maybe he is changing a progessive fps system into a scheduled timer system. so that instead of things relying on fps and being checked every frame, they could be checked only when a certain timer comes due, thus negating fps advantage AND cutting out cpu usage. this is just a vague idea, i dont know halflife scripting, but ive done lots of work on tribes mods.

in any event it would be awesome if there was a growth in servers.

80$/mth (US)? Ouch. It'd only cost me about 30$ US to host a server myself.

Don't make judgements on server pricing. More often than not there is a strong correlation between server quality/speed/latency and price. Look at the backbone that the server is run off and the machine it is actually running.
$30 might get you a 20 player server, but(especially for ns) you won't get nearly the quality of the better servers.

Yes, we are working to get server farm companies in the loop on the performance improvements (and by we, I mean me, as this is boring stuff <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> ). So far the response from such places has been very positive, and we think that most companies will be adjusting their NS rules appropriately.

I pay 80 bucks for a public server. That is a pretty reasonable price considering we get a webpage and a nice ping, plus a lot of tech support.

The quality of the server itself is easily just as good, since it's my own server, howerver, the server's connection to the internet is mostly beyond my control and at the whim of my ISP. Considering what it costs to run a server, however, I still find 80$ US/mth expensive. Maybe I should start hosting them <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Running a server hosting company off of your DSL or cable connection is not going to be very good. $80 a month a 20 player public server is a very good deal.
