Kharaa Outfit!
Was talking on irc to lugerman about planetside. game is sounding like its gonna be quite good.

So when it comes out, we all need to play on the same side on one of the servers, so we can be one big happy family. Except for Comprox, he can join another side! :P

So lets get organized now so we can start things right from day 1. :P

As soon as I get a job, and can afford the 50 dollar game and the 12 bucks/month in subscription fees, I'm in. I loved Tribes 2, can't wait for this one.

Do ya all think this game is worth 12 bucks every month? Well as I think, YES IT IS!
This game is gonna own all MMOFPS.

Anyway, hope that not the server is located in North America or something, then I will get major lag becuase I live in sweden.

Isnt this the first MMOFPS ?

TSA would be more suitable more than Kharaa.

Endless Ages was a First-Person MMORPG.
Was kinda dull though.

Does anyone know of the release date for PlanetSide?
I've signed up for the beta test but haven't heard much yet.

paying for on-line shooters is rediculus... we should play DragonEmpires when it comes out, Codemasters (operation flashpoint) is making it, its gunna have variable economies (kinda like Freelancer, but selling too much to one city actually drops the price on the item) and alliances that controll the politics of the cities... its gunna be cool

Planetside is NOT an mmorpg. its a fps game. not a role playing game. So your comparrisons to role playing games are, well, stupid.

Release is supposed to be "soon" I think... :/
• pardzhpardzh Join Date: 2002-10-25 Member: 1601Members
By the way Luger and Blahman and a couple other beta testers I've heard from talk about PlanetSide, it sure sounds like the $12/month is going to be worth it.

It'd be real neat to have Kharaa or TSA as an outfit name too.

ahh yes, I love senseless flamage without actually reading. I said paying mothly for an on-line shooter is lame, and we should play MMORPG instead.. so check that tude dude

Sounds great, but does anyone have an idea what the system specs are? I'd love to play, but doubt if my rig can handle it. . .

Companies simply can't host games on servers and have dynamic worlds (that means staffing the office even AFTER release, and patching the game every month) without either selling 20 million copies, or charging a monthly fee. They'd go bankrupt.

I would like to play it too, but I also have the problem of the old system. I would enjoy to fight alongside the rest of the forum regulars!

Mechwarrior 4, Operation Flashpoint, and Americas Army (AA is not the best example cause they get money from governmnt) all have a massive on-line scene and they dont charge per month... the only reason the MMORPGs charged per month was because they kept your charachter info "safe" on their servers.. in an FPS you dont need to do any of that so why charge monthly??

Heh, I'm sure I'd need an upgrade too. I'm hoping to start a new job within the next week or so, and one of the first priorities is upgrading this rig.

currently : Athlon 650, 256mb pc133 ram, 64mbRadeon..

Reccomended specs are in the neighborhood of a 1.0 Ghz CPU, and about 512 RAM. Coupled with a decent video card, of course.

Now, the reason you have to pay for the game is that there are going to be large, persistance world servers. IE: You take a base with your buddies before schol in the morning, you come back later and it's being used as a staging point for a raid on the next base. Also, you will have a character, and they will have skills and such. At it's core, this game will be like a FPS, but there will be skills and stuff going along with it.

Think Deus Ex, with a slightly watered down RPG model. I'm at least checking out the demo, maybe the whole thing.

This is a MMO game ... there could be upwards of a 1000 people plus in one server ...

once I see that in OF or AA - then I'll agree with you

Cant say anything about MW4, never played it.
• DOOManiacDOOManiac Worst. Critic. Ever. Join Date: 2002-04-17 Member: 462Members, NS1 Playtester
A lot of people here seem to not grasp the concept of an MMO. Op Flashpoint, America's Army (and other UT based engine games), and Battle.net are NOT. Hell, battle.net is just a matchmaking service, it doesn't actually run the game server itself (game creator's machine does that). As big as 32 or even 64 (bf1942/tribes) players is, that is not even an MMO.

MMO games have several thousand people on one server at once. That's a lot of bandwidth, and even more CPU & RAM usage. No way is Average-Joe-Linux-Zealot going to host a server for that in his spare time like he can for a smaller Quake or Half-Life server. It just can't be done.

When I played DAoC, I actually liked having just one server to play on. Since you are paying money, its going to be low ping all the time, like 60 or so. Also, never full. That's nice. So you don't have to hassle with gamespy or ase, you just jump on and you're in.

This is a game where there can be *hundreds* just in battle around you, let alone having thousands spread all throughout a gigantic map. It really is something you have to see for yourself to really comprehend how cool it is, but its a whole world above 32player game servers.
