One of the grooviest features of Half-Life is that you automatically download a map you don't have. It's usually a slow download, but it's a good fallback measure.

Most servers that run a lot of custom maps will tell you what site to download the maps from in the MOTD, since it can lag their server a bit to serve as the download location.

Apotheosis

Most NS servers I've played on have disabled the map download feature, purely because it lags the server to hell, and as a result they automatically kick you. So it is advisable to go and get the popular maps beforehand if you don't want to be ejected from the server.
