playing HL late @ night, with numerous things jumping out at you, and in NS when your a lone marine walking around, and you can hear that occasional click click, or a distant chuckle...freaky!!!!!!!!!
Phantasmagoria. My Dad owned it for a long while and I tried it out a 1 or 2 years ago, pretty freaky! Especially when u see how Carno killed his wives.
Doom - Nothing can beat the sheer disturbance of hearing the Cyber Demon for the very first time. (considering the nature of games available at the time)
Dungeon Master - These sorts of games have always freaked me out, cos monsters always have an unhealthy habit of appearing right behind you.
Thief / Thief 2 - Zombies and undead fun.
Undying - Amazing game which never ceased to stir my soul in some way or another (except for the pirates bit).
Alone in the Dark - The first game of its kind, and a damn spooky one at that.
Hexen - Not so scary as some of the other games I've mentioned, but rather had a tendency to make you depressed...
I stand by my theory that sound does a hell of a lot more for dark atmospheres and fear than visuals.
The games that creeped me out were Resident Evil (1&2), Silent Hill, and System Shock 2. Out of those 3, I would say that System Shock 2 is my fav out of them.
Sound is everything when it comes to creating something creepy, but visuals help too.
Silent Hill - THE most disturbing game i've ever played...Man, I was playing that game one day, when I went to bed I thought I heard a sound. I look up and see this white thing about the size of a child way far off in the back of my basement. God damn f***king dehumidifier.
Also, Onimusha, though not nearly as bad. The giant Ronin zombies. ugh.
I don't know about you guys, but I played this one game called Gadget. It was the freakiest game I ever played, and it makes it 10X worse when your playing by yourself and in the dark. There is this one litte kid whos got the scariest face, kinda like that girl in THE RING.

AITD is one of the best and creepiest games ever. Too bad the sequels weren't as good. AITD's music deserves special mention for being very creative and beautiful. Infogrames' Shadow of the Comet is also worth checking out because even though the game is not as creepy as AITD, the music alone makes the experience worthwhile.
me being a resident evil god i can't really say im too scared by it anymore. but ns? definately not scary. Resident Evil 2.. the least scary no sorry thats Code Veronica, They huNger? im sorry but i just can't see a first person shooter being scary. WEll the game that scared the crap out of me the most so much to a point i was discouraged to finish it. Was the original "Clock Tower". If anyone knows what im talkin about please say so
Silent Hill is also a scary **** game that would be my #2. Reisdent evil isn't too scary cuz i mean you have allies thru the whole game. Silent Hill you was the only sane person in the whole game.
Aliens Versus Predator 2, really scary walking around with that motion tracker and aliens popping out of nowhere.
However half-life, pfft. The only thing I play half-life now is to fool around with aliens, kinda fun when they get stuck in the trains and get gibbed, Or mine up barney in wall mines than shoot him with a rocket. Its also fun pushing those scientists into those things that hang from wall, then they fly up and gib. I find half-life really funny now with it's poor A.I.
Hm, Undying is freaky right up until after you take care of the second to last sibling. Then the plot just goes right out the window. And the pirates were kinda silly. SS2, very creepy. Hearing little monkey noises and knowing you were about to get hit by a fireball or something. The ghosts, er, psychic residue in the ship. The zombies howling "The Many are Strong!" "I'm sorry!" and "Kill Me!" The cyber nannies... oh my, the cyber nannies. There's something so wrong about them... alternatively humming and then yelling "I'll rip out your eyes!" Never played any of the Silent Hills, but I've heard good things about them. AVP2 was the first 3d game I played when I upgraded from a Pentium 2 to a Pentium 4, so the first thing I noticed was the graphical improvement over a lot of the games I had been playing up to that point. The first few levels of the Marine Campaign are very well done, but the game sort of goes down hill from there. And I want to play Thief 1 and 2 soooo much, but I can't simply find any copies.
Hmmm... for some reason I can't think of any other games, even though I've played way too many... Bah. If I think of something else, I'll edit this.

SS2 is STILL scary, and I haven't managed to get through it yet.. or even to the second ship. Still at the part where you put the chemicals into the ventilation system to unblock the elevator. I can't help but switch it off, every time a Nursemaid starts chasing me.. or I hear one walking around outside the vent I'm hiding in. SH2, I'm still walking toward the town... I get partway down the frontage road, and have to stop. Having all that.. nothing. The suspense is a lot worse than having a zombie jump at me. PE/PE2, again, the suspenseful moments are done fairly well.. less so in PE2, but they're still there. Haven't gotten through to the end of either, though I can't remember where I stopped. PE mostly because I was an idiot and put the burst-fire modification onto my best gun, which did massive damage, and had been upgraded out the *ss. Without the ability to choose how many shots I used (thought it would fire them all at once.. stupid me) the game just kept killing me over and over. considering it had over 10 shots available (in case of a large attack-charging boss) I mostly just stood there and got beaten on.
Silent Hill is the only one that I managed to finish, and it STILL gives me the creeps to put the disc in and even walk around a *little* in the foggy streets. Even with all the powerful weaponry. Only managed to finish it because I had a friend leaning against me and watching me play.
The Resident Evil series never really did anything for me.. more of **** me off when I ended up with a metric *ssload of ammo, and was unable to kill even one freaking zombie. The first one kept eating me over and over.. perhaps that's why it lacked depth. Though watching others play, it didn't really have that much suspense.. was all jump-at-a-body.
Never played Undying, but I hear it's pretty bad on the fear factor.
Whoever thinks They Hunger isn't scary doesn't know what they're talking about. There's nothing scarier than being in the catacombs and you have nothing but an umbrella for a weapon, then all of the sudden you hear "freeeesssshh meeeeeaaaaat" or "huuuuuuunnnngggeeeerrrrrr."
I nearly shat myself the first time around in that game.
AvP and AvP2's marine campaigns were both freakin scary. You'd be walking around in pitch darkness then all of the sudden, "beep.................beep.........beep...beep..beepbeepbeepbeepbeepbeepbeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep"
I never played system shock 2, but looking at some of the screenshots, it looks pretty scary, but then again the graphics look severely outdated. Then again, it's not really the graphics, it's more the idea I suppose, and lots of these games are about putting stuff into an over-active imagination.
I can't wait to see Doom2, I bet lots of people will end up getting psychosis playing that game.
Can't believe no-one's mentioned the protocol droids from SS2. Those things scared the pants off me, mostly because you only really seem to encounter them when you're on low health and ammo, so you don't want them coming anywhere near you.

The ghost sequence with the doctor operating on an unconscious nurse with the intent of turning her into a half-cybernetic monstrosity was also very disturbing.
Yes, the protocol droids are one of the worst. Especially because they're saying things like "Sir, sir! I can't help you if you hide!" only to run over and say things like "No worries, it's no charge!" BOOM!
The cyber nannies were good too. "Little ones need lots of meat to grow big and strong..."
The Many were pretty cool as well. The intermingling voices were great.

I can't stress enough how scary this game is. It's for PS2 and XBOX, btw. I totally recommend it, make sure you play it alone in the dark. (no pun intended ) It's a hundred times worse then silent hill, if you were at all scared of that. Clive Barker's Undying almost made me shat myself.
The leaked Doom3 alpha is just terrifying.
The feeling of walking around a deserted school with nothin but a flashlight and a lead pipe.. D:!
Made me sh!te my pants when i came across some mutant baby thing 0_o
