x-com really sucks! It is full with bugs and makes no fun at all!

ReadyRoom.org still won't show up on my computer. It's the only website that doesn't work for me...

I simply refuse to believe no-one has mentioned Betrayal at Krondor yet. BaK is the best computer RPG ever (yes, Fallout and other such things included) and it's free nowadays. The music is beautiful, the plot captivating and the whole thing works beautifully constantly rewarding the player with hidden items, small quests and colourful descriptions of items and places. If you haven't played this gem, it's high time you gave it a spin.

Works fine on my 486-DX. Your computer must suck.

Not free, but demos available for those who like a challenge:

http://www.esimgames.com/ Steel Beasts. Will show you just how easily a M1 Abrams gets shredded by OPFOR when you're the tank commander instead of someone qualified to do it

2 tactical games. What they have in common with the game above is that they're _quite_ difficult

    EXCUSE ME?!?!

Civ, Rairoad tycoon, Civ2, Transport Tycoon... just to mention a few!

Never played either Civilization, so I can't vouch for them... but I preferred X-Com over Transport Tycoon. TT got really monotonous after a while, X-Com had more variety. Plus, I'm a sucker for researching things. I even liked Outpost because of the massive tech tree.

And Betrayal at Krondor is free now? That was one of those many games that came out when I had no money, I'll have to check it out. I even bought a slow old PC so I could play all these games, since XP is finicky.

/me eyes his old PC Gamer Classic Games Collection CD...

I wouldn't mind the non-openGL version.... if it were free. Is Tie Fighter free yet?

Edit: Also, if you're REALLY cool (read:old) then you enjoy a good game of M.U.L.E. I've got the c64 version, but I'm unsure of its legality. There other versions out there, couple good ones for the amiga i hear, but the ones I've tried just aren't the same. I'd serve up some links but I haven't really found a good M.U.L.E. clone for the PC yet. Well actually, theres Space Horse, which costs money but I believe they have a demo... Yup, here it is. Unfortunately you're gonna want 4 players (at one computer) to really get the goods from this game. So simple, so fun.

Classic Trash Has just about every old game that I can remember. Some are not allowed for free download, but those that are are marked in green, so far as I can see, it's all legit, but if it aint just edit out the link and no harm done

    {Edit}

Monkey islands 1 and 2 were pwn, but 3 was just so far off base it put me off for eternity, it was TOO cartoony, nope, I think I'll stick with my pixels thanks...

If they'd stuck to the more traditional interface for monkey Island, I would have played it like no tommorow.

Anyway, you cant kill that which you cannot understand...

Cronos, I saw that a while ago. Check out their FAQ. Abandonware, while it may be abandoned, is still copyright protected, therefore still making it illegal to download. It's somewhat of a grey area for many: since the company that sells it has either dropped it or gone out of business, the original developer would receive nothing from that purchase.

Darklands is by far the best microprose game ever. It's also the best game ever that never got a sequel.

My first RPG, the first game I played for over 24 hours without a break, and the game I spent the longest playing without completing, by far! It's not freeware though, but I own it legally

Dink Smallwood is a great freeware game, and you can download extra modules too, so the fun never stops (unless you get quickly tired of toilet humour )

If you're into emulation, any of the FF games are gold, as are the entire metroid series (although metroid 1 feels crude after the others).
