Hi there. Long time lurker (since November 2nd, I believe <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->), first time poster.
I've been playing and enjoying the game a lot since the release, and my 64k ISDN connection has been more than enough to keep it playable... until strange things happened.
I downloaded Cheesy's bots, the latest (beta?) version. I had a blast commanding the little AI soldiers, and didn't even bother to play online for a few days (no, I've never been comm in an online game, and I don't intend to... atleast not until 1.1 <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->).
When I went to play online after this, I noticed I had HUGE choke values. ~30 when standing in an empty room, and up to 80 during intense battle. I'm guessing the amount of choke has different impact on the game depending on how fast your connection is, but as I said I've got 64k ISDN, so maybe that should give you an idea.
"Right then", I thought, "all the things I've done since I last played NS online was install the bots, and install this CDRW drive. Surely the CDRW drive can't have anything to do with it?" So I re-installed NS, and sure enough, the choke value was lower... but still not as low as it used to be!
That's the part that stumps me. I used to get 0 choke pretty much throughout the entire round, but now I'm getting 0-5 when "idling", and 14-20 during battle.
My questions to you are:
-Is there any chance that the CDRW drive has affected the performance of my isdn card or something? (sounds crazy, but you've gotta ask. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> I did have lots of problems with all kinds of other stuff [including the isdn card] when I first tried to make it a primary slave. It's working fine now as a secondary slave.)
-How much choke would you consider is "normal", and how high can it be before you'd say the game gets unplayable?
Thanks in advance.

Anyway, here's an update.
I just played again, and I was getting 0 choke when doing nothing, and around 25 when fighting. It seemed kind of ok, but suddenly I was thrown to the console with this message:
"Athos has overflown." (Or something similar)
I'm clueless. It used to work as a charm weeks ago... <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

I dont know the values for ISDN, so hopefully some1 will come here and tell you <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
.....
Am I the only one who thought about some greek mythology or something ?
hehe
Anyway, I got those rates.
rate "3900"
cl_cmdrate "30"
cl_updaterate "20"
The thing is, everything USED to be perfectly fine. I had tweaked every network setting in ASE to make the game run just fine, and neither of those settings have been changed... which probably means there's not really much anybody can do to help. :/
Oh, and I just returned from a (very short) game where the choke refused to go under 20.
Darn.
