What was yours?
What is the oldest computer game, not console no atari .
I'm talking 80/86, 286, or if you're younger...something else, the first, or one of the first, computer games you ever played???

For me, it was a game called Chopper 2. You were a military (sort of) pilot of a super equipped helicopter that was full with 1 big pixel sized bomb, forward arcing (semi auto, fast if you could hit the spacebar a lot) machine gun, and a limited supply of missiles. It was a side scroller with a number of missions, and two different "bases" you could start from. Hehe, monochromatic, for me it was orange lines and blocks on a black background. And I'll never forget the creator, Mark Carrier, because if you blew a hole in the side of the leftmost cliff, you were able to enter the "MARK CARRIER ZONE!!!" for a free ammo refil.

Waaaay back in the day, my dad got me all these education ASCII-based games in DOS. I was about 3 when I learned to use a computer.

I don't remember what they were called, but I do remember one being about the 9 little indians.

The first non-educational game I remember playing was some really old Apogee game called Major Stryker.

I forget what it was called, and even though there were a couple, this is the one I remember best:

It was a simple large pixel game where you fired shells (squares the size of the bold button in the posting dialogue) over a tree at a small moving square on the other side of the screen. It only moved horizontally, you could only fire one shot at a time. If you took too long, text came up saying: "World destroyed, film at 11:00"

edit: btw this was on an Apple ][c

Dark Castle, or Captain Magneto. Both are CLASSIC games. Captain magneto was loads of fun, what Hydlide wasn't. Dark Castle is a weird platform game, that was loads of fun.

If we are not including things as C64 and only stick to PC/Mac and so on it´s easy.

It was a game called Pirates(I think).
You had to build yourself a privateer kingdome of some sort by... well, doing pirate stuff really. And getting married alot( Not sure if that is basic pirate stuff).

Really fun. Played it alot in school between classes.

And we played this on a 286 so you can imagine what it looked like. The sea battles were pretty cool though.

Lunar Lander, on an Apple ][ clone.

Or an older one (side-scroller) where you fly between a pair of walls, dodging asterisks until you get to the 'boss' of the level.. had to shoot out his moving wall-shield, then shoot it. Then fly through the wall after blasting yourself enough of a gap to slip through. PITA.

Great Googily Moogily, I can't remember the absolute first computer game I played, but I know its gotta be on a system that predates the Apple IIe. I know I played a lot of games on my own Apple IIe, I'll be darned if I cant remember a name of any of them. I started my video gaming habit at a very very young age
But I do remember playing Pac-Man in the arcade, Naudica on my 386 (Enjoyable Edutainment ), and the obligiatory Wolfenstein 3D & Doom. I can remember every game I played on my 386 and up, but anything before that (besides Atari and Nintendo) is hazy...

Did anyone ever play any BASIC games? I remember for a long time putting in a 5.25 inch floppy with a bunch of items that had to be run from basic. At the time, I think I was six or so, I was impressed because it had some sort of tax form spreadsheet as one of the programs. Hehe back in the day when 100mb was unfillable

The first game I owned was probably Commodore Soccer (if it was called that) for C64. If we're talking PC then the answer is Alley Cat.

It was either wolfenstein or this game where you jumped around colecting things, and there were these awsome puzzles you had to solve and stuff, damn that was one of my favorite 2d games, probly still sitting somewhere at my dads old work place building. You had to use MS DOS to start it up and I remember I could never remember how to start it without my dad. Wolfenstein was incredibly fun, I remember always trying to hit the use key infront of a nazi flag (where the secrets usually were) to get all kinds of guns and stuff...ah those were the days.

My oldest memories with computer games were when I was 4 and I played Raptor, and maybe Sango Fighter. I think Jumpman Lives! was my first game, tho... Definetely the oldest I have (had, I gave away the diskette as a birthday present to my friend ).

Did you know that Wolfenstein 3D is really 2D?

some sort of vertical scroller on the c128 where you flew some two-pixel jet and had Wagner's 'Ride of the Valkyrie' play in the background.
if that doesn't count, then I guess it'd be X-Wing on the Mac ...or was it Dark Forces?
• SnO0PySnO0Py Join Date: 2003-02-27 Member: 14092Members
Dark Forces owned, except I could never get past level 4, and eventually I lost the game, so I never got to use a lightsaber . That Star Wars rebel thing, I can't remember the exact name, was fun. I could never beat the first few levels so my dad helped me there too. Too bad he dosent play any games anymore with me, but then again I've gotten to be such a video game addict he would never get a turn cause I would never die ^^.

Lunar Lander owned!!! OMG, I remember that game, I had an Apple ][ clone too. It eventually fried itself for some reason or other, computers were so prone to static and overheating in them days. Actually inherited the little bugger from my uncle. Learnt to program on it. I made alot of my own games in Apple basic when I was a kid watching ASCII jump around the screen. Kids have it too easy nowadays.

Most other games are too obscure to even remember.

I REMEMBER THAT GAME!! It was hidden or something in the windows system tools or somewhere not related to games, this was before start button. You were like a king kong guy and had to explode another guy across the the city. First game I played, I think it was Oregon Trail. First game I owned was the original X-Wing.

First game on C64 was probably Boulder dash. Hard to remeber since there is/was a lot of games for C64. Aaah sweet nostalgia

On PC my first game was either Testdriver (created my love for Testarosa) or Leisure Suit Larry 1 (created my love for... eh, never mind )

Pirates on C64 was and is a great game. It also lasts much longer than the version for PC called Pirates Gold. I still have my map over the carribean and I still play it from time to time on emulator. My diskdrive to C64 has sadly died so I have to use an emulator. I offer a cookie to anyone who knows how to make the second disc for the emulator to work. Buggs med that I can't retire my mighty pirates

[edit]
oh and for the pc the first games we had were doom, star wars: tie fighter, and megarace. but megarace was sort of newer, it was on cd and the others were discs. we still have those 3 games somewhere, maybe ill fire up tie fighter for some nostalgia...
