I was just wondering if there was anything critical I need to know about NS before I go make a fool of myself , such as abbreviations or acronyms.

dont go in to the comm chair untill you know the maps well, and your team wants you to (ask)

dont gorge unless you know how to build (right click menu), and your team wants you to (ask)

listen to teammates

rt = resource tower

Learning the hive names would be good. I suggest you run each map on your own as an alien and just check the hive names and their rough locations. Learning map layouts takes time, but without knowing it your comm will ask you to go to sewer hive and bam, you're there!
If you don't understand an abbreviation just ask what it is, the NS community is a good bunch so you should get help. If you ask an experienced player he may even tutor you in the game!
I love posts like yours. Most new players just jump into a game and generally make an **** of themselves. Well done for asking!

Id start aliens and just skulk until you get a feel for the maps and learn some stuff by watching. Since alien skulks are more independent than marines are. Then try out marines but dont comm for the love of god. GL.

There is a post on Acronyms and Abbreviations, which should have been stickied a long time ago. I've bumped it for your perusal

I'll rattle off my usual list of pointers.

1: Marines: The commander is there to give you orders, not for you to give him orders. He is not a weapons vending machine. If he tells you to do something, just do it. Following bad instructions is better than following no instructions at all.
2: Aliens: Stay as skulk. You don't cost anything, so you aren't hurting your team by getting killed.
3: Aliens: You are going to get killed. A LOT. The learning curve for kharaa is very very steep unless you have prior experience with melee combat. Don't get discouraged, and don't think you're particularly bad because you can't kill anything.
4: Marines: While we're at it, don't get discouraged if you can't hit anything and keep ending up as skulk food. It's perfectly normal for new players.
5: DO NOT GO GORGE. I repeat: DO NOT GO GORGE. Just trust me on this one, ok? Play as aliens for a few weeks, find your feet, get used to how everything works and what everything does. Learn how the resource system works (well, it's going to change in the next patch but it's worth reading up on anyway. There's a sticked post explaining it). When you have a feel for the game, THEN you can try gorging if it appeals to you. (Then again, they're going to fiddle with the res model in the next patch so that multiple gorges might be ok.... but that's just going to confuse you. For now, just don't go gorge, ok?)
6: It might not be such a good idea to go commander until you're used to the game. It's not such a terrible thing as going gorge (there is a shortage of willing commanders as it is, so often any commander is better than no commander) but you should at least familarise yourself with the marine tech tree and structures and stuff.

Good luck!

And don't hump the armory You don't need 250 bullets for your lmg and 30 bullets for pistol.
Especially if commander shouts, that go trought the phase gate. If you die and when you next spawn, just jump right trought the phase without taking any ammo.

You can rambo with aliens, but with marines, try to stick in group. You have much better changes to stay alive and a group of marines are really powerfull too.

and in general,

just go Marines first couple o' times
and tell your team m8's, especially the mature ones (you'll notice soon enough, always gibbering over de vox-link and making wise decisions etc etc) that you're a new guy, that you want to learn, that you need waypoints, and that you'll do as your told

oh yeah... offering yourself for building work always gives a good impression to others in the beginning

Just play on a cool server with an admin

H2O servers
TFZ servers
[don't go to voogru or you'll might get confused , Gwahir]

RT= resource tower
HMG= Heavy Machine Gun
GL = gernade launcher, good luck (look for context )
LMG = light machine gun
CC = Command Console, Computer Core hive (context again)
PG= Phase Gate
Com = Commander
HA = Heavy Armor
JP = Jet Pack
IP = infantry Portal
Proto = Prototype Lab
MT = Motion Tracking
dt, d, def = Defensive upgrades/towers
OT = Offensive Towers
WoL = Wall of Lame (phrase for a huge wall of alien structures)

There are a TON of map specific ones, like the RR. It can mean ReadyRoom (all maps), Red Room (ns_nothing), reacter room (ns_tanith), etc. It'd take a long time to do those, but if you ask your team atleast somebody would tell you.

actually I suggest he doesn't go to voogru, one reason being I never go there, another being that he might get confused when other servers don't behave the same way.
