AFAIK when Steam gets out of beta stage will show a wizard to users to migrate their HLCDKeys into Steam subscripions... PPL without a (valid) CD-Key can buy or rent a subscription using a credit card

Theres interesting information on resource files:

"Since it is your first time subscribing to a game,
we need to ask you for some additional information."
    "Steam_SubscribeIntroProductName" "Valve Premier Pack"
"Steam_SubscribeUserInfo" "Please enter your first and last names, exactly as they
    appear on your credit card."
    "Steam_EmailAddress" "Email address"
    "Steam_FirstName" "First Name"
    "Steam_LastName" "Last Name"
"Steam_SubscribeCardInfo" "Choose a credit card type, and enter the card number
    and expiration date."
    "Steam_CreditCardType" "Credit card type"
    "Steam_CreditCardNumber" "Credit card number"
    "Steam_CreditCardExpiration" "Card expiration"
"Steam_SubscribeBillingInfo" "Enter your address as it appears on your credit card

Indeed... Steam will be able to use your existing files to save up download time

"SteamUI_ConvertExistingInfo" "Your Half-Life installation will now be copied \ninto Steam. This may take several minutes."
    "SteamUI_ConversionCompleteInfo" "Steam pre-loading complete."
"SteamUI_ConversionCompleteInfoFailed" "Pre-loading existing files to Steam failed."
    "SteamUI_ConvertExistingStatus1" "Pre-loading %s1 files from disk."
    ...

Steam is great, I like my steam. 1.6 isnt that great though. But the idea behind steam is incredable. I believe that Steam IS a subscription service (because on my steam it says that since its beta, all subscriptions are free), so i'm guessing you'll have to pay monthly/yearly for it, and not just a one time thing. Unless someone changed the definition of subscription. Also, you subscribe to different mods, or you can subscribe to all of them. dunno how this is going to work out, since its beta, and i'm subscribed to all of them. Maybe its a choice? Because ns doesn't want to do that. Its already been said. So who would the money go to?

Just another "great service" internet users will have to pay for.

I couldn't gcare less about it. I'm doing fine now.

but when is steam gonna be completed?

Well if what Valve has to say about Steam, I'm not sure I would want NS on it. That'd mean Valve owns NS, no? Sounded to me like Steam was going to be an all-retail deal, not just for the good of the mod community.

    Err, could be wrong...
