To compete with "PG-13 porn" like Maxim
On Shacknews I saw a link to This article on the Chicago Sun Times.

Since the late 1990s, with British import Maxim leading the charge, the most successful of these so-called lad mags, PG-13 versions of the real McCoy that are less apt to bear the stigma of pornography, have swiped chunks of Hef's would-be turf and become the pubs of choice for a new generation.

One of the things that has always made Playboy unique is that while it had nudity, and certainly people bought it for that, it wasn't really "pornography" in the sense that something like Hustler is. It always seemed more dignified, more classy. That sorta thing. Just my thoughts on it anyway.
I'm very interested to hear Monse's take on this one heh.

I was somewhat disappointed at the lack of actual naked chicks involved, less than an average UK "lads mag", eg "Loaded" or whatever. ( my actual birthday celebrations involved more nudity, but that's a different story..and one which resulted in a slight concusssion..damn you Tequila!)
Keep in mind, despite our quirky / harsh censorship laws over here, we have naked chicks in the tabloids on page 3 as standard..
No naked chicks at all in Playboy really, but I do remember some very well written interviews with Harvey Keitel.
Playboy has lost in the class depart to Maxim. Stuff (same company) covers the other end- kinda a guide for working Joe's.
Stop fooling yerself, and reach for that top shelf..
Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Pr0n....
Edit: In the UK pr0n is everywhere, but always on the top shelf of the local newsagent....in case you were wondering.

like buying bottled water. it'd freakin better be worth buying in the first place.
Never mind.
Edited to remove needlessly lengthy ramblings on the fine line between art and pornography.
Gist of it.."its a fine line between the two in my opinion"
Much easier reading than my previous jabberings.

True
however Playboy has been trending towards softcore, but they now have specialty magazines that cover the hardcore aspects of the pornography business, playboy is becoming less and less a [] the [] out of [] and more of a "gentlemens magazine" they articles in there have become more and more intellictually stimulating, heck Dr. Drew Pinsky reads playboy, and is a passionate passoionate man with three kids and loving wife, does he read it for the porn? no he reads the magazine, for the articles.
you want hardcore, get hustler, or penthouse, you want more suave and sofisticated, then go for playboy (well, thats what there aiming for)
on a more insteresting note, Hugh's parents are very anti pornogrography, could this be there influence finally getting to him?
[fixed a freudian slip]

Sweet merciful crap! Hef's parents are still alive? They must be 300 years old!
I've never found Playboy's photography to be degrading, insensitive or even pornographic; it's just pictures of quite beautiful women in the buff. They're not "spreading" (anyone ever seen the point in that? Male and female genitalia are NOT attractive ), they're just nude. I've never seen a problem with that personally. I can see why Playboy would want to change their image though because it's become far more socially acceptable to buy "men's magazines" with non-nude pictorials, despite the fact that Playboy provides very good articles (I seriously DO read them ). Australian Playboy went bust a while ago though (interestingly enough it had an "unclassified" rating meaning anyone could buy it. I love you and hate you Australian Censorship Board ), so I guess it's a sign of the times. But I hope Playboy won't go under. It's become so symbolic of the "gentleman's magazine".
Note: Hope I didn't step over the line with this post.

I think it's safe to assume that hef's parents have *ahem* passed
but they were always vehimently against Hugh starting a magazine like playboy
i don't do playboy anyways so wth
(on an off topic note, I dont understand how some people drink city water, so much crap in it, I get mine from a well, best water I ever tasted)
